Colorado-Oregon Quotes

March 02, 2012 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe

General
“It was a game of runs I thought. No run was too large; it was a pretty close game all the way through. We just couldn't get it done to end the game on top.  No loss ever feels good and it shouldn't feel good. When it starts to feel okay, you've lost the spirit of why we all compete. I'm not used to this and our team can't be used to this.  I don't think our team has gotten used to it.  At some point you've got to make a change.  A couple missed box outs and they score and we over help on somebody, there are mistakes we just can't make.  We've got to be steady throughout.”

On Losing Close Games
“Anytime there's a close game, there's no one shot or one play that loses you the game.  I could think of a few times in the second half that lost us the game.  Those things that you can control, those are the things that come back to bite you.”

On the Final Play
“We wanted to drive it to the hole. We knew they were going to be keying in on Chucky [Jeffery]; they were right on her and Lexy [Kresl].  The plan was for [Brittany Wilson] to get a 12-15 foot jumper in there. I thought we had a decent look, it was a little bit of a floater, just couldn't get it to go down.”

On CU's Play Against the Zone Defense
“I think we [executed well] at times, I thought there were times that we executed well. There were some times in the second half, getting some good inside and outside looks. I liked that we didn't just take all threes, we got some easy shots inside, Megan [Malcolm-Peck] and Julie [Seabrook] had some nice easy looks. I thought we were more versatile in how we were getting shots.  There was a period in the second half where we couldn't get a shot to go down.  When Lexy got the three to go down, it gave us a bit of a boost”.

On Closing Out Close Games
“We just have to believe we can win those close games during the season.  We've just got to get back to it, there's no reason why we can't. You have to step up and knock down good free throws, set better screens. I thought they got some late free throws when we fouled them. It's hard to win when that happens. More so, Oregon has to get some credit. They executed and played well down the stretch, and they hit some big free throws.”

On Players Stepping Up
“Everyone has to step up. We talked about playing within yourself and doing that a little bit better. No one can play outside of what they do, [it] just [has to be] a little bit better. Meagan stepped up and hit a couple shots tonight, had some nice shots, Julie scored a couple with her back to the basket.  You want your juniors and seniors to be playing well during this time of the season.”

On Bringing G Chucky Jeffery Off the Bench
“[It was a] practice decision, it was something we felt like was best for our team and we wanted to bring her off the bench.  She did respond well and she had good confidence, she really helped our tempo when she came in.”

Colorado Players

Julie Seabrook
On Oregon's 8-0 Run Early In The Second Half – “Like coach said, there was a lot of different points. Our missed box outs were a game changer. If I were to guess it would be that.”

On The Last Five Minutes –“They really keyed in on Chucky and Lexy. We looked for them in our offense. When they were taken away it was really tough.”

On Her Play Offensively – “My family is here so that's cool. How I always look at it is if my team doesn't win it doesn't really matter. I'm happy with the way I played, but a win would've been better.”

Meagan Malcolm-Peck
On Amanda Johnson – “For the most part I think she made some tough shots and sometimes we lost her in transition. I thought we realized what we had to do on the defensive end and keyed on her pretty well.”

On The Last Five Minutes – “I think we were looking for out-cuts and drives to the basket.”

Oregon Assistant Coach Keila Whittington

General—
“We tell them all the time, it's not going to be the defense that will lose the game, it's the offense. Whether it was making three point shots, or making those free throws, or having our guards or posts run and make some easy buckets inside, however we can score right now--- that's what we need to do. I think our players really understand that and have the confidence to step up and make some shots when we need them.”

On The Win- “It was very exciting and definitely a defensive win for us. When shots weren't falling, we would get offensive rebounds to give us more opportunities to get more shots up. We drew some fouls and then went down and played defense.”

On Deanna Weaver's Spark-“We looked at the stats from half time and she had two threes and was really leading us in scoring. To see her take control late in the game and get that nice jump on the win was great.”

On Danielle Love's Back-to-Back 3's To Take The Lead-“We look at those stat sheets sometimes and she has the potential to make those sorts of shots. We need her to score; we need her to look at the basket. Those threes back to back were really crucial.”
