Jeffery Named CU Athlete Of The Week

March 28, 2012 | General, Women's Basketball

BOULDER - Women's basketball player Chucky Jeffery (junior) has been awarded CU Athlete of the Week for the week of Mar. 19-25.

Jeffery averaged 18.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in leading the Buffs to a 2-1 record last week and the quarterfinals of the 2012 postseason WNIT. She had a double-double in all three games, and recorded CU's third-ever triple-double in the WNIT quarterfinal game at Oklahoma State. Jeffery had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and matched a career high with 10 assists against the Cowgirls. It marked Jeffery's second career triple-double as she also had one in 2010 against Loyola Chicago.

In the third round game against Villanova, Jeffery had 19 points and pulled in a career and team season-high 17 boards, the third highest amount in CU postseason history. In the second round at South Dakota, she scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting and added 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. She helped lead Colorado to its best record since 2003-04 at 21-14.

Also nominated for this week's award was freshman women's tennis player Julyette Steur. Steur continues to shine during her first semester as a collegiate athlete going 1-1 in singles play during the weekend in Colorado's 5-2 loss to No. 1 UCLA, and a 7-0 loss to No. 3 USC. On Friday, Steur upset the No. 104 nationally ranked player, defeating UCLA senior McCall Jones in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.  It was Steur's first career match at No. 2 and kept her tied for a team-best ninth dual victory. She also became the first CU women's tennis player to beat a ranked player this season. Two days later, the 17-year-old freshman from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands came up short against the No. 3 slot falling to No. 65 sophomore Kaitlyn Christian, 6-0, 6-4. It was Steur's fourth straight match against a ranked opponent from the Pac-12, in which she has won the first set on three of the four matches.
