Stuller, Austin Pick Up Athlete of the Week Honors
August 28, 2012 | General, Soccer, Volleyball
BOULDER - Soccer's Anne Stuller (junior) and volleyball's Alexis Austin (freshman) are awarded CU's Athlete of the Week for their athletic accomplishments during the week of Aug. 20-26. The athlete of the week is sponsored by Silk, Horizon and International Delight.
Soccer forward Anne Stuller had back-to-back two goal games over the weekend in the Omni Hotels Colorado Women's Soccer Classic. In the home opener against LIU Brooklyn, the Boulder, Colo. (Fairview) native scored her first goal of the tournament from 30 yards back, assisted by teammate Hayley Hughes. Less than five minutes later, she scored an additional goal, putting the game away at 2-0. Against Wright State on Sunday, Stuller netted another goal off of an assist from teammate Quinn Krier in the 27th minute. With 10 minutes remaining, Stuller helped put the game away once again, following up a saved shot taken by Shaye Marshall.
Scoring six of the Buffs' seven goals for the 2012 season, Stuller now joins Nikki Marshall (2006) and Katie Griffin (2005) to become only the third player in CU history to have three multiple goal games in a single season. Her six goals so far this season rank her sixth on CU's list of most goals by a junior.
Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter Alexis Austin played a crucial role in helping the Buffs win the Sam Houston State Invitational over the weekend. The true freshman from Houston, Texas (Cypress Falls) recorded 33 kills, 15 digs and five block assists in the three matches. In the final match of the tournament, the team rallied from a 0-2 deficit to win the match. Austin led the Buffs with 16 kills while hitting .270, earning her MVP honors. Her 16 digs tied a match-high with SHSU's Devene Wells-Gibson.
