University of Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle
General
"Today's game was one of those deals where we were shooting the
basketball well, we shot 59 percent from the field, we overcame a lot of other
ills and some deficiencies that we have to get better at. You shoot 59 percent
at home you should win, but obviously the 20 turnovers and letting them score
53 points in the second half. We let [Allen] Crabb and [Justin] Cobbs who are
both great players get heated up in the end. I am proud of our guys, we beat a
good, solid Cal team but there are some areas that we're not as good as we
wanted them to be if we want to go on and beat really solid teams."
On The
Team's Balance
"I think our guys offensively have really made some strides and you have
really seen it in the last couple of games, just the way we are passing the
ball. Our guys are sharing more, we are playing inside out; Josh [Scott] is
understanding that they are coming to dig and they are coming to double-team
him and he doesn't have as much free reign as much as he is used to and he has
to pass it out. The thing about Cal is that they are one of the better
defensive teams in our league, and so when you shoot as well as we shot against
them it shows that we are pretty efficient and that we are sharing the ball and
executing. That was the positive and the negative is obviously we had the 20
turnovers."
On The
Team's Defense
"They got some open looks that they missed and they looked a little
tired in the first half but got a second wind in the second half and that's
when they made their shots. Again I cannot say enough about (Cal coach) Mike
[Montgomery] and what he has done in his career and the Cal team with the
players that they have, which are some good players. It was a good win and when
you win by 10 at home and we should have won by 20, but again, I think it goes
back to the expectation level of this program and where we are right now."
On
Getting Back To .500 In Conference Play
"My thing is when we were 1-4 all we wanted to do was get to 2-4, we are
all about the next game. The fact that we are .500, given the fact that we were
1-4 is a really positive sign. But we are not happy being 4-4, we have to win
the next game and keep scratching and clawing and move our way up."
On The
Bench
"I thought the fact that we had [Andre] Roberson, Josh [Scott], and
Spencer [Dinwiddie] with two fouls in the first half yet we still went in with
a 16 point lead was really a positive thing for our team. It speaks to our
bench and the progress that they have done in the last couple of weeks. And we
have seen it in practice, when we do competitions in practice it is very
competitive. I thought that even in the second half, Eli Stalzer gave us some
great minutes including Jeremy Adams and Sabatino [Chen]. But the fact that we
did what we did in the first half without Andre, is a huge confidence booster
for this team because we rely on him a lot. When Andre went out with his two fouls, I knew
in my mind I was going to still go back with him and give him another crack, but
we kept expanding the lead so there was no reason to risk it."
On
Offensive Efficiency
"I think Cal did a great job getting back in transition, in the first
half we got some good stops, but we were not able to convert. We just didn't
convert like we could in the fast break, part of that was Cal's getting back. I
thought another negative for us was the 13 offensive rebounds; we didn't do a
good job of boxing out the shooter. That rebound margin would have been a lot
better in our favor if we would have boxed out better, especially down the
stretch. I thought we got tired, and
Xavier Johnson was exhausted because he hasn't played 18 minutes in the first
half before, and Andre was really gassed in the second half. Cal was tired too,
but then Crabbe and Cobbs started making some shots, and it is amazing how when
those shots go in it kind of energizes you. But we were tired and I think that
had something to do with it and the foul trouble in the first half I didn't get
to rest Xavier Johnson like I normally would."
On
Andre Roberson
"Andre is a great defender, tonight wasn't one of his better nights
defending. But, Andre so important to this team because he is so long, he is
very versatile. But Andre is really playing within himself he has kind of quit
thinking about scoring and when he quits thinking about scoring and shooting it
ends up happening for him. I think our guys are also looking for him more. The
thing about Andre is that he has the ability to shoot the ball, and putting the
ball on the floor, making plays and getting to the rim. He did a good job of
that tonight."
On
Askia Booker
"Offensively he is shooting the ball better, which is key, he was a
little spotty tonight and turned the ball over more times than I would like.
But I thought Ski played with confidence, maturity, he made shots when he
needed to. Askia booker when he plays well, our team feeds off of him like they
feed off of Andre energy wise. He was good tonight."

On Cal's Shooting Percentage Improvement From First Half
"I would say mental
lapses. As much as you preach playing the possession, I think all of us as a
team have to look at the score board and say 'look we're up 12, then hit a
three and we're up 15'. When that starts to roll downhill a little bit and
you're only up by eight then you have to tighten the screws a little bit.
Sometimes you can't. They had two very prolific players (Justin Cobbs and Allen
Crabbe). Once they start to get open shots and feel themselves, they just keep
going."
On Cal's Open Looks
" When you have two guys combined shooting 41 shots,
you're going to expect that they are going to score somewhere around 40 points
as well. You just don't want them to be very difficult for you. You want them
to be layups or dunks, or easy threes. You want them to have to make jump shots
over our hands and test them."
On the Importance Of This Win
"Very important. To say you don't look at the
standings would be a lie. You don't focus on them, but you look at them. We
knew that people on top of us were playing each other. If we get these next
three wins then next week we would know that we have a chance to move up and
gain some traction and confidence. These
(Stanford and Cal) are two very big wins. We're going to look to go to Utah and
just continue to win the next game."
Xavier Johnson, Fr., F
On Stepping Up With Andre Roberson In Foul Trouble
"Definitely.
Andre is a big part of our rebounding. I felt like I needed to help him in
rebounding while he was on the bench."
On Having 20 Turnovers As A Team
"We need to be more
careful with the ball. We can't just turn the ball over like that. I had a
couple of turnovers myself. As a group we just have to be better."
California Head Coach Mike Montgomery
General
"How do you explain not making baskets? Certainly
the kids want to make shots, they're not thinking in terms of trying to miss
shots. I thought our shot selection was random, I thought that we panic-shot a
little bit and we shot first pass and hoped that it would go in rather than
have a good shot in context with the movement and that hurt us. We turned the
ball over a lot and if they had played well in the first half it would have
been a disaster."
On David Kravish Not Playing
"You wonder just
coming in here and David spraining his ankle and everything if we thought that
we could win, you hate to think that but that's the way kids are."
On Cal's Shot Selection
"We compounded our mistakes by not
making very good decisions in terms of the shots that we took."
On Cal's Offensive Execution
"The ball was not moving and we were
taking one pass shots and that wasn't going to do us any good. Guys who can
shoot the ball, we need to look to get them shots, it's not that other people
can't shoot the ball but it has to come in our offense and be shots they can
make."
On Cal's Offensive Struggles
"They're a good defensive team, but it
was our inability to move the ball and get good shots, I mean it's a
combination always, but the ball was not moving it's as simple as that."
On The Decision To Play Zone
"It was a lineup that we felt might be
effective it wasn't, we haven't played very much zone, they got two or three
baskets in a row on pretty easy looks."
On CU Shooting 7-15 From
Three-Point Range
"Well when (Spencer) Dinwiddie shot, he
hit it from 40, we had good rotations a couple times on pick and rolls. We
didn't do a great job on pick and roll rotation in the first half, second half
we did and (Sabatino) Chen hit one in the corner and he's a 20 percent
three-point shooter so you have to live with something, he made it, give the
kid credit. They didn't do anything in particular we just didn't do a very good
job of coverage."
On The Teams Chances Of Making A
Second Half Comeback
"Yeah, we needed a lot of things to happen for us, we were down 16 on the road
against a good team that's pretty tough. The thing is we scored 53 points in
the second half so obviously we did something well although they shot 70% in
the second half so I don't think either team was playing good defense but we
had a chance to cut it to eight, maybe at that point they would have felt a
little pressure and we would have needed to sustain it but hopefully we figure
out how it is we need to play, what it is we need to do, what shots we need to
take and then we need to take them, that would be a great step forward for us."
