Paul, English Awarded CU Athlete of the Week

BOULDER - Men's golfer Jeremy Paul (freshman) and volleyball's Kelsey English (junior) were awarded CU Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for their athletic accomplishments the week of Oct. 14-20.
Leading CU to a sixth place tie in California's Alister Mackenzie Invitational, Paul recorded three consecutive subpar rounds on the 7,103-yard, par-72 Sonoma Golf Club course. Opening with a 71-67 scorecard on day one, he finished with a 1-under 71 for an 8-under 208 score, the best collegiate performance of his young career as well as a new CU freshman record. Tying for seventh individually, he also tied for the team lead with 37 pars while recording the second-most birdies (11), along with an eagle. The Viernheim, Germany (Albertus-Magnus) native scored no worse than bogey on any hole, while only having five throughout the competition. He played the 12 par-5 holes at 8-under, fifth-best among all players.
English, a middle blocker, led the Buffs with 3.33 kills per set and hit .528 in a pair of matches last weekend on the road. She recorded 20 kills and just one error on 36 attacks. The Colorado Springs, Colo. (Doherty) native also added three aces, seven digs and six blocks for 26.0 points. In CU's sweep of Oregon State on Sunday, English recorded 11 kills and hit a match-high .476. Against Oregon State, English had three aces, four digs and five block assists. The defeat marked CU's first Pac-12 road win since joining the conference in 2011. The previous Friday, English had nine kills and hit .600 (no errors on 15 attacks) in a three set loss to No. 21 Oregon.
Also nominated for this week's award: Michael Adkins (football), Morgan Pearson (men's XC), Shalaya Kipp (women's XC) and Madison Krauser (soccer).
Adkins, a freshman running back, rushed 13 times for 137 yards and four touchdowns in Colorado's 43-10 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. In his first career start, he rushed for the fifth most yards by a freshman (fourth-most by a true frosh) in a first career start. His four touchdowns set a CU freshman single-game record, snapping the old mark held by Herchell Troutman (Texas, 1994) and Christian Powell (Sacramento State, 2012). The last Buffalo to score four rushing touchdowns in a game was Lawrence Vickers vs. Missouri (2005).
Pearson was the first Buff to cross the finish line at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, coming in seventh overall in 23 minutes, 39.68 seconds. The junior helped the Buffs claim the Blue race title, Pearson was just .33 seconds behind the sixth-place finisher, Purdue's Matt McClintock (23:39.35).
Kipp ran in her first meet of the season at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, helping the No.12 CU women to a seventh-place finish in the Blue race. It was Kipp's first race since running the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the IAAF World Championships in August. Finishing in 19th-place finish, her final placing was up two spots from her 4k position of 21st. The senior crossed the line of the 6k race in 20:35.58.
Krauser, a sophomore, helped the Buffaloes get the lead in the 67th minute of the team's matchup against No. 9 California over the weekend. Krauser's third goal of the season, the Buffs held strong through two overtimes for the 1-1 tie. The last time the Buffs tied a ranked team was in the 2010 Big 12 Tournament, when CU pushed No. 6 Texas A&M to 0-0 double overtime draw.
