CU Falls 2-1 To Utah In Double Overtime Battle
November 08, 2013 | Soccer
SALT LAKE CITY – The final Pac-12 Conference match of the season was bound to be a battle, as the University of Colorado soccer team fell 2-1 to Utah in double overtime.
After over 70 minutes of scoreless action, the Buffaloes grabbed the lead off an own goal at 70:44. Their lead would hold until the closing minutes of regulation, as Utah tied things up in the 87th minute off a corner kick. The Utes claimed the victory with less than seven minutes remaining in the second overtime to stay undefeated in home play this season.
The Buffs look to keep their tournament hopes alive as they slip to 12-6-2 overall, 4-5-2 Pac-12. Colorado set records early in the season by shutting out their first five opponents and winning their first six games on their way to eight non-conference victories, all program firsts. The Buffs have won 12 games for the first time since 2008 and four conference games for the first time since 2010.
The loss was the Buffs' first in overtime this season. CU concluded the regular season with a 2-1-2 record in overtime play. The Buffs are also now 6-5-1 this season when entering halftime in a scoreless tie.
Utah increases its home unbeaten streak to 12 games, dating back to the 2012 season. During that span, Utah has outscored its opponents 25-8 and posted six shutouts. The Utes improve to 10-4-6, 6-3-2 Pac-12 to claim third place in the conference. Goalkeeper Lindsey Luke entered the game ranked second in the nation in save percentage and 19th in goals-against average.
Utah just edged CU in shots (12 to eight) and shots on goal (six to four). Both teams grabbed eight fouls and took four corner kicks apiece. Anne Stuller led the Buffs with five shots, three of which were on goal.
"It was a hard fought match," CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I thought both teams played well. There weren't a ton of chances, but I thought both teams had quality chances. Unfortunately, the last one went to Utah."
For the 12th time this season, the Buffs entered halftime in a scoreless tie. In the opening half, both teams took their time to try to build an advantage in possession and momentum, though neither team really succeeded in doing so, with Utah just outshooting CU four to three. Defenses took over in the final 20 minutes before the break, with Brie Hooks taking the final shot of the half at 25:10.
Utah got the first corner kick of the game in the third minute, though the short kick wasn't enough to spur an attack. In the eighth minute, a Ute beat both Hayley Hughes and Lizzy Herzl in the right corner, with her cross getting to the front of the net, where Avery Ford sent the ball wide. Less than 15 minutes in, Utah remained offensively driven, with Ashton Hall approaching from the center and knocking the ball just past the left post. Hall continued to drive the Ute offense, getting Annie Brunner to grab her first save of the game at the right post. Â Â
The Buffs responded impressively in the 19th minute, with Anne Stuller striking from the left edge, forcing Luke to reach to the far post to bounce it away. Stuller got the ball back, but the Buffs were unable to get another shot off.
The squads traded off offensive drives at the midpoint, taking the last shots of the half. Following corner kick, Utah's Katie Rigby headed the ball from near range, sending the ball left of the far post. Hooks quickly responded for the Buffs, but her shot was also wide. In the final 15 minutes, both teams had opportunities, with Utah earning a free kick from 35 yards out and CU's Brooke Rice getting contact with a great through ball in the box, but neither team was able to seize the opportunity to score.
Both teams played aggressively, each with five fouls in the first half, and forced the ball all over the pitch. CU looked strong in the midfield, but struggled to finish (having three offside calls in the first half), and while Utah could consistently get into Buffalo territory, they couldn't hold onto any momentum.
After Stuller took a hard hit in the first 15 seconds of the second half, the Buffs got two opportunities off corner kicks, though they were unable to take any shots at the net. In the 47th minute, Brunner grabbed her second save of the game off a kick by Katie Taylor. Hooks got the ball back for the Buffs, hitting her shot wide.
The Buffs had a solid look at the net in the 60th minute, when Stuller rushed from the center and took her time to approach the net, but her only defender tackled her from the back to send her shot off target.
In the 70th minute, Utah's Kaycee Buckley bent her shot the far post. Brunner slid out to get the save. The ball got loose, as another Ute approached, but Alex Huynh came up big with a clearance. Â
After having an opportunity in front of the net just minutes earlier (though she was eventually called offsides), Tori Cooper, however inadvertently, helped the Buffs to a 1-0 lead. In a one-on-one situation in the right corner, Cooper slid the ball towards the net to beat her defender. Lindsey Luke came out to meet the ball, as a Utah defender got in front to also try to clear the ball. From six yards out, the defender wasn't able to get the ball out, and took it into the net for an own goal. Â
CU looked a bit reenergized after the goal, but Utah was hungry for an equalizer. In the 79th minute, Jill Robison hit the ball high from distance. Five minutes later, Utah got a corner kick. After several touches, Ford sent the ball wide. That momentum would take them to the closing minutes. A controversial call would give the Utes another corner kick in the 87th minute. After some commotion at the net, Hall got a cross sent back to her to tie the game at 1-1 and send things into overtime. Megan Trabert was credited with the game-tying assist. Â
Neither team was able to keep possession or momentum early into overtime, limiting each team to one shot apiece in the first 10 minutes of extra time. Â In the 97th minute, Ford sent a deep shot just left of the far post. Though Utah began to pick up the pace, the Buffs got their chance in the final 44 seconds of the first overtime. Stuller struck from the left at close range, but Luke came up with a big save. CU got a corner kick, but they didn't have enough time to make something of it. Â
In the second overtime, both teams were fighting for the win. First, Rigby forced a save from Brunner. In the 102nd minute, Madison Krauser got to Hooks, who found an open Stuller at the left post. Stuller rushed in to take a shot, but was stopped as two defenders met the keeper to get back-to-back stops. In the 104th minute, Robison found her mark, striking from the left edge and netting the game-winner off a deflection into the far post. Â
"We always talk about, 'If there's a chance on one end, there's probably going to be one on the other end.' We had a good chance on their end; their keeper came out and made a really good save. On the other end, it was a bit unfortunate that the shot took a deflection, but we had a shot that took a deflection as well. It was an evenly matched game against two evenly matched teams. We just fell a little bit short today."
The Buffs await their postseason fate as NCAA Tournament at-large bids are announced on Monday, Nov. 11. The selection show will air on NCAA.com at 2:30 p.m. MT.
