December 18, 2013 | General, Men's Basketball, Track and Field
BOULDER - Track and field's Eileen Gehring and basketball's Xavier Johnson received Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday for their athletic accomplishments the week of Dec. 9-15.
Gehring, a native of Madison, Wis. (Edgewood), won two events at the U.S. Air Force Holiday Open on Friday. Clocking a personal best 7.58 in the 60-meter dash, she followed that performance with a time of 38.74 in the 300, a non-traditional event for the Buffs.
Johnson, a native of Los Angeles, Calif. (Mater Dei), scored 12 points and had a career-high 15 rebounds in Colorado's 80-63 win over Elon at the Coors Events Center. The sophomore forward added a career-high three assists and had one blocked shot. Shooting 3-of-6 from the field, Johnson also had season-best two three-pointers.
Also nominated for this week's award: Arielle Roberson (women's basketball) and Mark Jones (track and field).
Roberson, a sophomore forward, had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the team's win over Denver. Recording her third straight double-double and sixth of her career, she is the first Buff with double-doubles in three straight games since Chucky Jeffery had three in a row from Feb. 3-Feb. 10, 2013 (at USC, vs. Oregon State, vs. Oregon). She had a season-high 22 points, establishing career-highs for free throws made (13) and attempted (17). Her 13 made is the third-best single game performance in team history and the most since Jackie McFarland's school record 15 (out of 16) vs. Villanova on March 27, 2008.
Jones, a junior, won the high jump at the U.S. Air Force Holiday Open, clearing 7-2.25. The mark tied his career-best, which ranks third on CU's all-time list behind Jason Dudley (7-3.5) and Bill Jankunis (7-3.25). With his performance, Jones has now surpassed the qualifying mark for the USA Indoor Championships in March.
