CU-Utah Quotes

February 22, 2013 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle

General
"We didn't shoot the ball extremely well tonight, but in the second half I thought our pressure defense really got us going and we created some offense with our defense. We talked at half time about how we have taken 29 shots and 17 of them were three's. I made it a point not to talk to our players about that stat because, I didn't want them to get tentative shooting the three ball because it is a big part of our offense and we really need it, but we did talk about getting the ball on the inside and to the rim more. We will start eventually making those shots; we have some good shooters on this team. We won this game in the second half holding them to 31 percent (shooting) and out rebounding them by eight in the second half. At half time they shot 50 percent and out rebounded us by two. Defensive rebounding comes into play when you don't shoot the ball like we are capable of."

On Sabatino Chen and Jeremy Adams
"Sabatino played terrific I thought, defensively and making some things happen. Jeremy Adams I thought his minutes were critical for us in both halves and I thought he really guarded well too.  Both those guys stepped up and that is what you have to have when you have a guy like Josh go down."

On Defense Without Josh Scott
"Andre Roberson is one of the best defenders in America. He is without a doubt the best defender in the Pac-12, and he does not get enough credit for what he does on the defensive end. We all know he is leading the country in rebounding, but blocking shots, deflecting the ball, getting steals, I cannot say enough about him. Our aggressiveness on the ball screens was the reason Shane [Harris-Tunks] only played five minutes, it had nothing to do with Shane. Shane is still a part of this team."

On The Defensive Traps
"They have little guards, but they had to call some timeouts, we got some steals that led to layups and that is what we wanted to do. We wanted to be aggressive, we knew our pressure late in the game against Utah, at Utah, really affected them and we wanted to pressure them and make them make some plays. They have some good players but they rely on their set plays a lot, and our traps were able to take them out of a lot of them."

On Andre Roberson's Defensive Rebounding
"I said when Andre arrived on campus, our program got better immediately. Alec Burks became a better rebounder because of Andre Roberson. Xavier Johnson is a good rebounder; I think he will be a better rebounder because of Andre, he sees what he does. If he can take that defensive mindset that Andre has and take that to heart, he can be a special player here. If our guys learn from Andre and learn from what he does to help our basketball team win games without scoring the basketball, we will be well off. The fact that he was our first recruit is very appropriate."

On Sabatino Chen
"My thing is be aggressive, take open shots when they are there in the flow and I think Sab did that. He didn't force anything. Sab is at his best when he is playing aggressive and pushing the ball. He is our only senior, there is nobody who cares more than Sab, and I was really happy for him tonight."

On Playing Against Larry Krystkowiak
"I like all the coaches in this league, I like Larry. I have a lot of respect for him. But when the ball goes up, all that stuff goes out the window, he wants to beat us and we want to beat him. The thing I appreciate about Larry is he has a good perspective on coaching, with his time as a player and a coach. He has a rebuilding job on his hands and I did that at Northern Colorado so I know what that is about. But when the ball goes up, we are trying to beat his brains in and he is trying to beat ours in, so that friendship stuff goes out the window. But I think he is doing great with that program, they have some good young players. You got some good freshman to build around but it is hard to rely on freshman to win games in conference play, and that is where he is right now."

On Why People Don't Know About Andre's Defensive Skills
"I don't know, probably because he plays for Colorado and the Mountain Time zone, and nobody on the East coast saw him play tonight. We don't get the national recognition that I think our programs deserve. But I will put Andre Roberson up against anybody defensively in this country. He can guard all five positions, he rebounds, steals, blocks shots, he is the best."

Andre Roberson, Jr., F

On Getting His 1,000th Career Rebound
"It means a lot, Coach Boyle has been preaching since day one, defensive rebounding, and I just took it to heart. Always getting a lot of rebounds growing up I think it just carried over to the college level so I feel like it's a great accomplishment for me and I'm not done working."

On The Scuffle Before The Second Half
"They were banging on our locker room door before they walked out, we took that as disrespect, Beau (Gamble) definitely did, he walked out there and tried to mess up their huddle and we were behind him 100 percent. We're not going to let anybody come in on our home court and punk us, so that's how it is."

On The Number Of Jumpers Taken
"That's a result of them playing in a 2-3 zone, they like to sag, and also Josh (Scott) is an inside presence for us and it did kind of play a role but you know most of it came from them sitting in a 2-3 and sagging in the paint."

Jeremy Adams, Jr., G

On Playing Without Josh Scott
"I was talking to some of my teammates and some of the guys that come off the bench and said 'hey we got to make up for Josh (Scott) if not by scoring then by rebounding' and I think we did a great job."

On The Scuffle Before The Second Half
"I was actually coming out late but I heard that Beau (Gamble) kind of walked through Utah's huddle and bumped everybody and that kind of riled everybody up and I came in at the tail end and said 'lets just take care of this on the court.'"

On Sabatino Chen
"He was telling everybody yesterday and today that this was a must win and he came out and played like it."

On His Improved Play
"In practice I usually practice with the (second) team but the past couple weeks I've been practicing with the (first) team so that's helped me get in a rhythm with the (first) team."

On His Health
"I was just feeling good tonight, I've been seeing an acupuncturist so I've been feeling the best I've felt in a while."

Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

On The Expectations Coming In
"I really didn't have any expectations necessarily. I knew we would see some pressure and a very physical level on the glass. We anticipated that for sure. Beyond that, I really didn't have any expectations."

On The Recent Injuries
"Brandon Taylor hurt himself. I haven't had the chance to visit with our trainer yet to know what the extent of it is. Jason Washburn tweaked his knee, I think."

On the Turning Point
"We threw the ball away a couple of times. They [Colorado] picked it up quite a bit in the second half. The turnovers, I thought, were what got it going. It got them in transition a little bit. We missed quite a bit of open looks. That was the key when we were getting looks from the back court. There were some long rebounds that came out and fueled their transition. We had a hard time scoring in the second half. We turned the ball over too many times in the first half."

On The Game Plan With CU Missing Josh Scott
"They were smaller, but they have a quick team. Not any post players necessarily were much better doing other things like posting up. I thought the energy and movement really got them [Colorado] going. They kept the ball moving. We struggled to get the ball inside. I was hoping we could get it in more, but they did a good job finding open spots, getting touches, and putting pressure on our post feeds."
