Colorado-Washington Quotes
February 24, 2013 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe
General
“Well you have to give Washington a lot of credit they kept fighting and coming back especially in the second half and we knew they can score the basketball. Every time they made a run and made it close I thought we responded well, I liked how the team stepped up and never gave up the lead in the second half. I saw a lot of heart and energy tonight.”
On Chucky Jeffery Second-Half Injury
“Well as soon as I found out it was her ankle I knew she would probably be tough enough to go back in. I felt like that injury kind of took out the air of the balloon for us, it happened so quickly for us in the second half and from there I felt like our demeanor kind of changed. But at the same time it was good to see her come back, she is a tough player and a big part of our team.”
On Chucky Jeffery's Performance
“Obviously her rebounding has been very consistent lately she is doing a really good job of finding the boards. Offensively I thought she was a little bit off today, she didn't hit a lot of her shots but she did hit that three at the top of the key at a critical point in the game, which was just huge for us. But I heard her say she had a lot of turnovers tonight and I would definitely agree with that. I thought she was just a little bit tentative, not quite sure of some of her passes were going to come from and normally those are mistakes that she has not been making, so I thought maybe she had a little bit of nerves tonight. Also then when she hurt her ankle I think it took her out the game for just a little bit.”
On Arielle Roberson And Jen Reese
“Yes those girls usually have to have good games if we are going to play great, and they have good games by being aggressive. They both score in a lot of different ways and they understand how the other teams are going to play them, and it might be different from game to game but they both do a great job. I thought Jen did a tremendous job of knocking down those two huge jumpers especially after missing a couple earlier, I think that shows a lot of mental toughness to be able to bounce back and knock down those two shots.”
On Getting Brenna and Meagan Malcolm-Peck On The Court Today
“For Brenna to even be able to put on her uniform I think is huge because those two mean so much to our program and its things that most people cannot see because they are not on the floor and they haven't been this year. But Meagan just the way she has lead us throughout the year and the things that nobody gets to see is, she is outstanding and a big part of the reason we are having the success we are having this year with her leadership. And then Brenna obviously has had her career cut short due to injury but the moment I told her she was going to be able to put on her uniform tonight she was extremely excited and I am really glad we could do that for her.”
Colorado Players
Chucky Jeffery, Sr., G
On The Win-“It's truly satisfying, we knew what was at stake but we just wanted to come out and play it like a regular game, they're a great team, they can score the ball so for us to come out and hold them to 61 points I think that's really good for our team.”
On Her Injury- “When something happens like that you feel the sting a little bit but I got up, taped it up a little bit and walked it off. I'll be alright.”
On Arielle Roberson- “Arielle (Roberson) has a really stepped up, she's been more aggressive getting on the boards, doing what she can to get stops, I think Arielle is going to be great because she's so versatile, she can knock down shots on the outside and score on the inside. When Arielle (Roberson) gets her motor going it's hard to stop her.”
On Playing On Senior Night- “It was kind of nerve racking a little bit, and I had way too many turnovers I think that was a testament to that. I was being a timid a little bit but I got back in it and I just kept playing basketball but at the end of the day it's about the team and not about senior night or anything like that it's about us coming out and winning basketball games.”
Brittany Wilson, Jr., G
On Shutting Down Jazmine Davis- “I knew she's a big asset to their team, a great player, I just wanted to be her worst nightmare and I think that I did the best that I could with that.”
On Chucky Jeffery's Injury- “We're a group of fighters. It took us a while to shake it off but after that I got the girls and said 'she'll be fine, she'll be back, I know her and its ok.'”
Washington Head Coach Kevin McGuff
On Second Half Adjustments
“More than anything [it was] intangibles. We played a lot of heart in the second half. Clearly, Colorado was playing harder than we were in the first half but in the second half, I thought both teams competed and played hard and it was a great game. Colorado just did a little bit more down the stretch to get the win.”
On Preparing For Last Two Challenging Games
“We will take one game at a time. We will get back and get a little bit of rest and get prepared. It is a short turn around – we play on Thursday – so we need great practices Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.”
On The Colorado Team
“They play hard and aggressive. Like I said, I thought both teams played pretty well but they made a few plays down the stretch to give them a chance to win the game.”
