CU-CAL Postgame Quotes
March 02, 2013 | Men's Basketball
University of Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle
General
“We couldn't get to the free throw line and that was one of the things we
talked about at halftime and we weren't able to do that and we couldn't make a
shot. We didn't have one guy offensively, really, step up tonight. But you do
have to credit Cal, they are the best defensive team in the conference and
tonight they showed it, and we aren't, and we have some work to do there; they
man-handled us. The key to the game was in the second half on the boards, down
on their end, Richard Solomon came up with every big rebound and put-back. Our
first shot defense was pretty good, but those second-shots were tough, you know
they ended up with 14 offensive rebounds and Solomon had five of them; a lot of
those were converted. We had 20 offensive rebounds and weren't able to convert.”
On Offensive Struggles
“We talked
about it at half-time we were down four but shooting 25 percent from the field and
we couldn't make a shot; again, Cal's defense has a lot to do with that, but at
some point you have to be able to step-up and make a shot, and if you can't
make shots you better get to the free throw line, otherwise there is a lot of
pressure on you defense. This building was alive today and these guys were
playing with a purpose, I don't fault our guy's effort or desire, I mean 20
offensive rebounds, you don't do that by accident, but we just couldn't convert
once we got them. I mean, if this doesn't motivate our guys to get in the
weight room, then I don't know what does.”
On Cal's Defense
“Cal wasn't
this Cal when they came to Boulder a month ago, so they've improved. We were
the best defensive team in the league for a stretch there but these guys have
overtaken us and today you can see why. When the game is called in a way that
is letting you be physical you have got to be physical. Our guys weren't able
to match that tonight in terms of finishing with the ball at the rim and they
were.”
On Andre Roberson Shutting-Down
Allen Crabbe
“He was
unbelievable (defensively). Justin Cobbs hurt us and Kravish and Wallace – coincidentally
two kids who were on our campus on recruiting visits and came to Cal instead of
Colorado – both had double-doubles. That stings me; I've got to do a better job
of recruiting.”
On Game Having Post-Season Feel
“It was a
big time game, and they (Cal) stepped up, and we didn't quite answer the bell.
But again it wasn't because of our lack of effort, it just wasn't our day
today, and we can't get too down on ourselves because we beat a good Stanford
team the other night because our guys believed in themselves and each other,
and we can't lose that and we are not going to lose that. We have two big games
next week at home, and we have to take care of business, so we can't cry in our
soup here.”
On Josh Scott
“He had
trouble finishing, but he battled and he's the Josh Scott we all know and love.
But it is maybe going to take him a little while to get back acclimated. But I
thought he did a good job for the first time (playing again). But it messes
with your rotation a little bit. When he goes out, your bench gets a little bit
shorter and there might not be as many options, but it was good tonight because
we were able to keep Andre (Roberson) on Crabbe, and he did a terrific job on
him. But Josh was good.”
