March 26, 2013 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER - Monica Engelman scored a game-high 27 points, while Angel Goodrich added 20 points and eight assists to lead No. 12 seed Kansas to a 75-69 victory over fourth-seeded South Carolina Monday evening in the second round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
In a game of runs that featured six ties and 11 lead changes, the Jayhawks (20-13) went into the locker room with a 42-41 advantage, after trailing by eight with over five minutes remaining in the period.
While South Carolina regained the lead with its first possession of the second period, its advantage was short-lived, as Kansas put together another run, capped off by a four-point play by Goodrich that gave the Jayhawks a 59-52 lead with 12:30 on the clock. While the Gamecocks (25-8) came back to tie the game, they never led again, as they shot just 26.8 percent from the field in the second half.
Ashley Bruner led three South Carolina players with double-doubles, registering 16 points and 12 rebounds. Aleighsa Welch added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Elem Ibiam tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jayhawks now advance to the Norfolk Regional semifinals, where they will face the winner of tomorrow's contest between top-seed Notre Dame and ninth-seeded Iowa.
