Buffs Finish 13th At Anuenue Spring Break Classic

KAPALUA, Hawai'i—The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in 13th place here Wednesday at the 2013 Anuenue Spring Break Challenge, maintaining the spot it held entering the day by shooting a 12-over par score of 300.

No. 11 UCLA rallied to shoot a 12-under 276 in the final round to finish at 10-under 854 and win the event by four strokes. Pac-12 schools occupied five of the top six spots, with No. 10 Washington taking second at 6-under par 858 and No. 17 Arizona State taking third at 2-under par 862. No. 31 Pepperdine finished fourth at 5-over par 869 and then there was a 17 stroke cushion before No. 39 Oregon in fifth (22-over 886) and Stanford in sixth (25-over par 889).

“It's a similar scenario to the first two days,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “We're making progress and getting close, we just need to continue to work on our putting and make fewer mistakes. They're getting there and working hard, and hopefully we'll see some good results soon.”

Junior Jenny Coleman and freshman Alexis Keating both led the way for the Buffs in the third round, shooting 2-over par 74s, but getting there in different ways. For the event, Keating finished just outside the top 20, tied for 21st, at 5-over par 219 through 54 holes while Coleman moved up a dozen spots to finished tied for 53rd at 14-over par 230.

Coleman had an early birdie to go under par and after finding herself at 2-over par halfway through her round, she then caught fire with three straight birdies to go back under par, where she stayed until the final two holes of her round, which she had a double bogey and bogey to close out her round at 2-over par.

Keating started her round the way Coleman ended hers with a double bogey and bogey to immediately open her round at 3-over par. She then battled back and was under par the rest of her round with three birdies and a pair of bogeys for her 2-over round. She remained at 2-over or 3-over throughout the entire round, twice following up a bogey with a birdie two holes later. She finished just one stroke out of her first top 20 finish and was just four strokes out of a top 10 finish.

Freshman Allie Zech also continued her solid play and finished her final round at 3-over par 75, the same score she carded in the second round, to finished tied for 51st at 13-over par 229. Like Keating, she had a bit of a rough start and was 4-over par after five holes before settling down and going under par the rest of the way with two birdies and a bogey. She shot the course's front nine at 1-under par.

Freshman Megan Haase started on No. 15 and after five bogeys in her first nine holes, she pared out her second nine holes to maintain that 5-over par and card a 77 for the round. She finished tied for 78th at 20-over par 236. Freshman Jamie Oleksiew finished her final round at 6-over par 78 and aside form a three hole stretch on the course's back nine and a four-hole stretch on the front nine in which she had three bogeys each stretch, she played the other 11 holes at even par with one birdie and one bogey. She was the Buffs second best finisher, tied for 41st place at 9-over par 225.

First day leader Grace Na from Pepperdine reclaimed the top spot and won after posting a final round 4-under par 68 to finish at 10-under par 206 for the event. She beat out Denver's Tonje Daffinrud, who was second at 5-under par 211. Arizona State's Neomi Jiminez and Washington's SooBin Kim tied for third one stroke behind Daffinrud at 4-under par 212 while the Sun Devils' Laura Blanco and UCLA's Tiffany Lua finished tied for fifth at 3-under par 213.

The Buffs will next close out the regular season with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Invitational, set for April 12-14 at the Karsten Golf Club. The Pac-12 Championships then take place April 22-24 in Valencia, Calif., hosted by UCLA.
