Kizirian, Reese Awarded CU Athlete of the Week

BOULDER - Track and field's Alexandre Kizirian and women's basketball forward Jen Reese were awarded CU Athlete of the Week on Thursday for the week of Jan. 20-26.
Kizirian, a junior from Thornton, Colo. (Mountain Range), won the men's weight throw at the Air Force Invitational on Friday night, setting a new record for the Buffs in the event. Recording a toss of 68-4.5, Kizirian surpassed his previous record of 67-2 by more than a foot. Kizirian's performance moved him into seventh place on the NCAA Division I list.
Reese, a junior from Clackamas, Ore. (Clackamas), averaged 22 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games over the weekend. In Friday's win over Arizona, she tied her career-best with 22 points, hitting 62 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds and registered a personal-best eight field goals in one game. In Sunday's loss to No. 14 Arizona State, Reese again put up 22 points, the third time in her career that she's had 20 or more points in a game. Against the Sun Devils, she established career-highs in field goals made (9), field goals attempted (18) and minutes played (36), while hitting a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Also nominated for this week's Athlete of the Week Award: Alexandra Aiello (tennis), Askia Booker (men's basketball) and Eileen Gehring (track & field).
Aiello, a sophomore, won a pair of singles matches along with a doubles match as the Colorado women's tennis team split non-conference play to open the 2014 spring season. The Buffs defeated Northern Colorado 7-0 on Friday, before falling 4-3 to Boise State on Saturday. Aiello swept UNC's Stephanie Catlin 6-1, 6-2 and then edged Boise State's Teal Vosburgh 6-4, 7-5. In doubles, she teamed with Carla Manzi Tenorio at No. 2 to defeat Megan LaLone and Morgan Basil of Boise State, 6-3.
Booker, a junior guard, averaged 10.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game in Colorado's losses at No. 1 Arizona and Arizona State. Against the Sun Devils, Booker scored 10 points to become the 31st player in CU history to reach the 1,000 career point mark. He also tallied a career-high five steals, along with five assists and two rebounds.
Gehring, a junior sprinter, won the women's 200-meter and 400-meter prelims at the Air Force Invitational on Friday. She finished the 200 with a time of 24.62 seconds, while finishing the 400 in 55.31.
