Booker, Honkonen Awarded CU Athlete of the Week

BOULDER - Basketball guard Askia Booker and alpine skier Jessica Honkonen were awarded Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday for their athletic performances the week of Dec. 30 - Jan. 5. 

Booker scored a career-high 27 points on Sunday, leading No. 20 Colorado to a 100-91 upset over No. 10 Oregon at Coors Events Center in Boulder. The junior from Los Angeles, Calif. (Price) went 8-of-16 from the field and added a season-best seven rebounds with four assists and a steal. He went 10-of-12 from the free throw line, also a career-best. Against Oregon State on Thursday, Booker tied two other teammates with a team-best 13 points and a personal-high four steals, along with four rebounds and two assists.

In addition to CU Athlete of the Week honors, Booker was also named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Monday by the Pac-12 Conference. 

Honkonen had two top-15 finishes at the 2014 Pat Miller Invitational on Sunday in Park City, Utah. The sophomore from Espoo, Finland (Makelanrinteen Lukio/Finish Ski Team) finished second in the slalom race and 11th in the giant slalom, helping the Buffs to a fourth place finish. Her second place finish in the slalom is a career-best. Additionally, Honkonen earned a maximum point total for NCAA Championship qualifying. 

Also nominated for this week's Athlete of the Week Award: Jen Reese (women's basketball) and Henrik Gunnarsson (skiing). 

Reese, a junior forward, helped lead the No. 17 women's basketball team to a 61-59 win over UCLA on Sunday in Los Angeles, Calif. Reese scored 15 points and went 5-12 from the field, adding two rebounds and two steals. 

Gunnarsson, a sophomore alpine skier, had two top-10 finishes at the Utah Invitational. Earning a seventh place finish in the slalom race and 10th in the giant slalom, the Buffs earned fourth place overall as a team.
