Soccer Upsets No. 23 USC On The Road

October 03, 2014 | Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The University of Colorado women's soccer team upset No. 23 USC 1-0 on Friday to earn its first Pac-12 Conference win of the season.

Junior Madison Krauser scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute to give the Buffaloes an early 1-0 advantage. Krauser received the ball from goalkeeper Kate Scheele on the counter-attack. The forward from Irvine, Calif. dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and with a USC defender on her heels, she chipped the ball from 30 yards out sending it into the top right corner of the net. It was Krauser's first goal of the season and Scheele's first assist.

"It was a typical road game in the Pac-12," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "Madi [Krauser] scored a great early goal and after that we absorbed a lot of pressure and defended well. USC is very deserving of their ranking so it was a very good win for us on the road."

The win lifts the Buffaloes to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-12. USC drops to 7-2-2 and 1-1 in conference play.

"It was a hard fought game and physical at times," said Krauser. "I thought we had good chemistry and played really well as a team."

The Buffaloes defense came up huge over the next 85 minutes, holding the Trojans to only four shots on goal and fending off USC's 14 corner kicks to help CU record its seventh shutout of the season.

"I think we really dealt well with their set pieces and corners," said Sanchez. "The defense did a great job and I was pleased also with how our forwards defended. They stuck to the game plan and dealt with their wide players pretty well. It was really a team effort from the defensive side of things."

The Buffaloes survived a couple moments late in the match as USC tried to net the equalizer.

At the 71:36 mark, the Trojans had a free kick from the top of the box. USC's Jamie Fink booted the ball toward a wall of Colorado defenders, but senior Darcy Jerman was there to block the shot.

Then in the 89th minute, Fink had another opportunity to score, but came up empty again when her shot was too high and went over the crossbar.

Scheele recorded four saves for CU and the Trojan's Caroline Stanley made two.

Colorado returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. MT when they face No. 1 UCLA to conclude the weekend.

"I know that we'll be ready to go and we'll give UCLA our best game," said Sanchez.

Notable:
  • Colorado improves to 2-0 on the road and 1-1 against ranked opponents
  • The Buffs are now 3-3 in six meetings against USC and have won three straight matches
  • CU is 5-0 when leading at halftime this season
