Colorado-Oregon State Notes
October 04, 2014 | Football
Players who carried out CU's symbolic instruments today:
Sledgehammer: Jeromy Irwin         Toolbox: Richard Yates
Special Teams Belt: Terrel Smith     Buffalo Head: Kaiwi Crabb
QUICKLY Oregon State now leads the series by a 5-2 count (2-0 with both as members of the Pac-12) … Colorado won the coin toss and then elected to receive for the sixth straight game in 2014 (and also won the OT toss at Cal last week) … The Buffs are now 21-25-1 when they wear all black (dating back to 1987 when CU donned the look for the first time), but have lost 11 in a row … Special Guests: Bronco defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio came up after their practice ended at Noon; he brought longtime family friend Gene Hackman with him (yes, the actor). They watched the game from the fifth level of the Fred Casotti Press Box …
First Career Start: DB Evan White (WR Tyler McCulloch made his first start since the '12 finale at Utah).
First Action: OLB Deaysean Rippy (on special teams: kickoff return)
The Buffs finished with 431 yards of total offense, the fifth straight game over 400; the last time a CU team had five straight 400+ yard games was in the middle of the 1996 season … The Buffs are averaging 476.7 yards per game at the season's halfway point, which is over 100 yards more than last year's season average (369.9). Opponents are averaging 419.0, or 49 less than a year ago.
Colorado was 10-of-17 converting on second down in the first half (5-of-10 on 2nd-&-5 or more), and 13-of-28 for the game, thus over the last two weeks it is 30-of-65 in second down efficiency …
CU averaged just 4.7 yards to go on third down … 10 different Buffs earned first downs, the last to do so was WR Nelson Spruce, who came in with 31.
WR NELSON SPRUCE (6-35, 0 TD) He saw his streak of seven straight games with a TD reception come to an end; but he did move into third all-time in career receptions with 161, passing Paul Richardson (156; 1991-94). He also added to his school mark with at least six receptions in seven straight games. He finished the game with 1,990 career all-purpose yards, 10 shy of the 45th player in school history to hit 2,000.
WR TYLER McCULLOCH (4-76, 2 TD RECEIVING) He had the first multi-TD game of his career (he came in with four total), and the 76 yards were the second most in his career. The TD on the 31-yard first quarter reception was the second longest of his career.  He moved into 29th place all-time in receiving yards with 908 (his 76 receptions are 27th).
QB SEFO LIUFAU (49-32-1, 308, 2 TD) He tied the school record for the most 300-yard games in a row – two – previously done by Koy Detmer (1996) and Connor Wood (2013). He has three this year, one shy of Detmer's season mark of four in '96. He continues to zoom up the charts: keeps zooming up the charts: passing yards (3,666, 10th), total offense (3,829, 11th) and TD passes (31, 8th). He now has thrown a TD pass in all 14 career games and two or more for eight consecutive games (both school records).
INDIVIDUAL LINER NOTES
PK Will Oliver (1-1 FG, 4-4 PAT) He has now made 85 consecutive extra points (adding to his school record), and has 112 in his career, a school record (old: 109; Mason Crosby, 2003-06). He has 229 career points, fourth all-time and two out third (231; Jeremy Aldrich, 1996-99).
TB Tony Jones (5-18 rush, 5-38 receiving). He now has 1,059 rushing yards (46th) and 475 receiving yards (76th), inching closer to becoming the ninth Buff in the 1,000/500 club in reach (and the 13th in the 500/500 club).
TB Michael Adkins (13-79, 1 TD rushing; 1-7 receiving) He had the third most rushing yards in a game in his career, and two more yards today than he had in the first five games (77) combined.
P Darragh O'Neill (4-50.8, 2 In20) He had his career game averaging 50 yards or more with at least four punts. He has 31 punts on the year, averaging a career-best 46.2 per, with 16 landing inside-the-20 (eight inside-the-15).
