Colorado-Western Kentucky Quotes
November 17, 2014 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe
General
"Western Kentucky is a good team and they're tough. I'm not even quite sure how we were in that game knowing how many more shots they had than us. They beat us in pretty much every category. When you have 24 turnovers and give up 25 offensive rebounds, it's amazing that we were in the game and had a couple of shots to win. I like the heart of our team, I don't think we ever lay down and died. Obviously, rebounding was a huge part to that game. I felt like we were able to get some defensive stops, but we couldn't finish, and when you can't finish by getting a defensive rebound, you're on defense for a long time. They had a lot of extra opportunities that we didn't necessarily get. It was a disappointing loss, but there are a lot of things that we can learn and will learn from it. We'll bounce back and we just have to get physically tougher."
On Western Kentucky's Offensive Rebounds
"It was some boxing out, but some of it was just pursuing the rebound. We were standing around and they were moving. They were just quicker to the ball. I thought we had decent position a few times, but they ripped it out of our hands a few times when we really needed rebounds. I didn't think our position was terrible, but we were watching and they were pursuing, and that's not a good combination."
On the Play of Senior Players
"To be a good team you have to make plays. Not everything is going to be scripted, drawn out and diagramed. Players have to step up and make big plays, and I thought all three of them did that. I thought Jasmine's [Sborov] heart showed all night long. She was rebounding the basketball, got us extra possessions and hit a couple of big shots down the stretch. It was a pretty good performance overall from her. Jen Reese started off a little slow, but I liked how she stuck in there and didn't let her confidence wane. I thought that was a big step for her. Lexy [Kresel] was just able to run the team. I thought she did a better job in the second half of controlling the tempo, making the right read and making the right pass. That's what really allowed us to get back into the game. We stopped turning the ball over and a lot of that was her setting the tone and everyone else feeding off of her confidence."
On this Level of Competition at this Point in the Season
"We normally don't play this great of competition so early. This is the best competition that we've played in the first two games since I've been here. There are definitely things to build on. They showed us our weaknesses that we need to fix, but you have give Western Kentucky a lot of credit. They play hard. They'll win their league and be back in the NCAA tournament. You can see why they were within five points of Baylor last year in the NCAA tournament. They play hard, they play together and they make plays."

On The Amount Of Turnovers Committed By CU
"We were playing into their speed of the game and their pace. We were just making some bad decisions, and our passes weren't as good. They just kept speeding us up, we had take control of the game and play at our pace that we wanted to and how we felt comfortable."
On Being Out-rebounded For The Game As A Team
"We weren't strong enough. I feel like we were somewhat going for it sometimes. But we weren't attacking the rebounds, and going for it, and being strong with it. That really killed us."
On The Loss Being A Disappointment
"I feel like we should have won that game. But like coach said as well, it's something that we learn a lot from going down the stretch. We'll watch film and all that, but overall it was a great game but we should have won."
Lexy Kresl, Sr., G
On the Offense Generating Turnovers In The First Two Games
"I guess you could say that. We get flustered kind of easily right now. And that's just about controlling the tempo and the pace. And being prepared for pressure. Were just pretty easily taking out of our offense in that aspect. I just need to control the tempo a little better."
On The Foul Outs Effecting The Flow Of The Game
"They definitely makes it hard. Especially for those people once they have been sitting on the bench for a while it's hard for them to get back into the game."
Western Kentucky Head Coach Michelle Clark-Heard
General
"I'm just so proud of our girls. Alexis [Govan] fouled out, Abby fouled out, but we just kept going. The kids never stopped. Tashia [Brown] got rebounds, Kendall [Noble] got rebounds. It shows the fight in our team. I'm telling you, Chastity Gooch, when it's time, she always steps up. I'm just so proud of her."
On The Second Half
"That was what we were doing. I was proud of them. I told them at halftime that I was proud of how they kept going to the boards and just kept working. We had 14 turnovers but some of those were passes that we didn't get our hands on or we made a good pass or it might have been too hard. I'm really ecstatic for our kids because they followed the game plan perfectly, everything we told them to do. They never gave up."
On Their Shooting Percentage
"We have to get better, we have to go to work. We missed a lot by the end but again, I give credit to our players who continue to keep hustling and getting our hands on the ball and everything. It was an unbelievable team effort."
On The Challenges That CU Presented
"I think the biggest thing is that we were trying to combat their size. They were way bigger than us but we're just so proud of our girls that we just kept fighting. We got some offensive rebounds and our hands on some balls and I think that helped us in the end."
