CU-Lipscomb Post Game Quotes

"I feel a little bit like I did after the Air Force game.  There were some very positive things we can take from today's performance on the offensive end, but there are some things that we need to get better at as a team and a program.  That's what this time of year is all about.  It's about growing, learning and figuring out what it is that you have to improve.  We have a tendency sometimes, especially when you play fast and want a high-possession game, to get into the trading baskets mode.  I felt that we fell into that mode at the end of the first half and really the entire second half, and you can't close anyone out that way.  The three-point shot is a great equalizer in college basketball.  We knew that Lipscomb was a great three-point shooting team and they proved that, going 8-for-16 in the second half.  We didn't do a great job of guarding the three-ball, but we had done a pretty good job this year up until today.  We need to recognize that, learn from it and get better from it."

On The Play Of G Askia Booker
"I thought Askia played a good floor game today.  He made simple plays, let the game come to him and didn't force the issue.  He had seven assists, three turnovers and shot it a decent percentage (6-for-13; 46.2%).  I thought Askia was great, it was good to get him going."

On The Play Of The Team

"One of the things that's hard when you play nine or 10 guys is that you want all of them to play well, but the reality is that you'll usually have one or two guys on any given night not playing well.  That's what I have to recognize as a coach to reward the guys that are playing well.  The guys that aren't will get another chance."

On The Lineup At The End Of The First Half
"I thought that they had a great opportunity to show what they can do and what they're made of.  We ended up giving up a lot of points in the last four minutes of that first half, but I wasn't going to substitute and put certain guys back in the game.  I wanted to see how they'd handle it, could they stem the tide or would the lead drop from 24 to 14.  It dropped from 24 to 14.  The players on the court have to take ownership and pride in that.  That's what I want every one of our players to understand when coming in the game.  They don't have to do it all by themselves, but take pride in what we're doing and have energy.  They should hold each other accountable.  It doesn't need to be the coach holding the players accountable.  I think in great programs you have players holding players accountable, and that's the point I'd like to get to."

On Positive Takeaways
"I thought there were some positives to take out of this.  We scored 84 points and we had 20 assists on 27 baskets.  We shared the ball and shot 55 percent.  We want to play inside-out.  I thought our guys did a good job of looking to get the ball inside and attack inside.  We had 40 points in the paint and that opened it up for some outside shooters.  I thought our mindset offensively was good, but defensively it wasn't quite there."

On Playing Against A Zone Defense
"I think we're a good zone offensive team and I think today proved that.  We got a lot of our inside buckets against their zone.  We got the ball to the short corner or the 'dead area' as we call it, we got the ball to the high post and good things happened.  We have to get a little better at passing and catching, but that's part of the process in November.  I have confidence that if someone zones up for 40 minutes we should be licking our chops.  Usually if a team is zoning you, unless you're Syracuse or the old Temple teams with John Chaney where a zone is what they do and who they are, they can't guard you in man-to-man, and we have to understand that.  One of the reasons they can't guard us in man because our inside presence is pretty good.  We're going to have to make some jump shots against zone, but we have to play inside-out, attack the paint and collapse the defense."

On Learning From The Win
"A win's a win, you know obviously there's a lot of things for us to improve on.  But I think it was exciting as well as disappointing for this game."

On Keeping Pressure On Teams Throughout The Game
"I think everybody on this team cares.  And that's just something we will have to figure out internally."

On Making An Emphasis On Ball Movement
"We're talented, and when we get the ball moving and share it with each other I think we can be special.  I think it really goes on our guards, because when they set the tone passing and moving the ball around it makes life for the rest of us a lot easier.  I mean I scored a lot of points off of assists tonight, and it's fun to play that way.  I was able to get [G] Askia [Booker] a shot, I mean that way of playing basketball is a lot of fun."

Askia Booker, Senior, Forward

On Getting His Game Back After The Early Injuries
"It's about that time, four games is long enough.  I owed it to my team, I had some other stuff I was dealing with personally.  I think that I've shown that I let it get to my head.  But I tried to keep my energy up throughout those games and to stay positive with my teammates help.  Individually I think my head is clear."

On Taking Pride In Moving The Ball
"Our emphasis is to get the ball inside, I mean this guy (F Josh Scott) is a scoring machine once he gets it there.  There's really no stopping him, once we feed him and [F] Wesley Gordon the ball."

On Coach Boyle's Message After The Game
"He was happy about the win, but he was saying that as of lately these past two games we have lost the second half.  If we can't finish out games against teams like Air Force and Lipscomb, what happens when we play against UCLA or Arizona, or any better team than them?  We just have to put two halves together.  We have to take care of the ball and take the right shots along with being disciplined on defense."

Lipscomb Head Coach Casey Alexander

General
"You just saw every game we've played this year. In the Division III games we play, we just happen to be the superior team and we could win in the end. The other ones, we had to spend too much energy to get back in the game and just didn't have enough gas in the tank to win it. The turning point was the deficit in the first half, the large margin in the first half. That was just too much for us to ever climb out of. We played hard. We have tough kids. But, that doesn't win games. That's a great start but you have to be a good team. You have to execute to beat a good team for sure."

On The Toughness Of His Players
"I give our guys a lot of credit for hanging in there and playing with some resiliency. They played with toughness and battled really hard. We have to play that way to start the game. We have to play with a chip on our shoulder to start the game. We have to play loose to start the game."

On Their Slow Start To The Game
"I was angry about the way we started the game. The scoreboard is the easiest way to measure. But, we had countless mistakes at both ends of the floor in the first half. Colorado is a good team and this is a tough place to play. We can't walk in here and make those kinds of mistakes and expect to be as competitive as we want to be. There's not a coach or player anywhere who doesn't want to win and who doesn't have the expectation to win. We know what the odds are. We know that things have to go a certain way for that to happen. But we didn't play the game in the first 15 minutes."

On How CU Competed
"They didn't take us lightly when they were up 23 in the first half. I just think we played better in the second half. We came back from Vanderbilt three different times and had a chance to beat them in the end. It's just the way that we've played. I love our guys' effort and I love our guys' fight. We just have to play a game for 40 minutes."

On Josh Scott's Record Setting Game
"He's a heck of a player. We knew that coming in. We didn't defend him the way that we intended to obviously. The performance wasn't what we wanted but even schematically we were supposed to front the post, have off side help. We didn't really get that all night long. He caught the ball too close to the rim, got too good of looks. When a player gets that, then we're going to get the results that we got."
