February 11, 2014 | General, Men's Basketball, Skiing
BOULDER - Basketball's Askia Booker and skier Camilla Brautaset were named CU Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the week of Feb. 3-9.
Booker, a junior guard from Los Angeles, Calif. (Price), led Colorado to a two-win week over Washington State and Washington in Boulder at the Coors Events Center. Averaging 23.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals, it was the first time in Booker's career that he netted back-to-back 20-point efforts. Against the Cougars, he scored a team-high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting (.750), including three 3-pointers and a team-high five assists and three steals. Against the Huskies, Booker tied a career-best seven assists, while putting up 21 points and five rebounds.
Brautaset, a freshman nordic skier from Oslo, Norway (Oslo Handelsgym/Heming), took fifth place in the women's 10K freestyle event over the weekend at the 2014 Jade Enterprises New Mexico Invitational in Red River, N.M. Finishing the race with a time of 35:40.5, Brautaset was just one second shy of placing fourth and 14.6 seconds away from a podium finish. She now has two consecutive top five performances in six races this season.
Also nominated for this week's Athlete of the Week honors: Alexandra Aiello (tennis), Jeremy Paul (men's golf) and Rune Oedegaard (men's skiing).
Aiello, a sophomore, won a pair of matches to improve her team-best singles match record to 16-3. Against the Jayhawks, Aiello won her match with a come-from-behind victory defeating Maria Belen Luduena, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (6). It was Aiello's third match of the year where she lost the opening set, only to rally and win in three. Against the Wildcats, Aiello defeated Iva Bago, 6-2, 6-3, and in doubles, teamed with Carla Manzi Tenorio for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Despite Aiello's efforts, the Colorado women's team fell to both Kansas (4-2) and No. 53 Kansas State (4-1).
Paul, a freshman, led the Buffaloes to a 13th place finish in the Amer Ari Invitational (Waikoloa, Hawaii) with a 9-under par 207 (69-68-70), tying for 16th overall on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King's Course layout. He had a team-best 12 birdies for the meet, along with 36 pars and an eagle with just five holes worse than par, which tied for the team low. He led the entire field on the par-4 holes, playing the 30 combined at 8-under par, two shots better than any other player.
Oedegaard, a junior, won the men's 10K freestyle race at the 2014 Jade Enterprises New Mexico Invitational in Red River, N.M with a time of 29:19.3. Oedegaard now has two race victories in four races this year and 11 career race wins.
