Colorado-Washington Quotes

February 14, 2014 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe

GENERAL
“Well, Washington's two guards are outstanding; [UW G Jazmine] Davis and [UW G Kelsey] Plum really torched us tonight. They pretty much did whatever they wanted to do and both had really good games. I thought Davis carried them in the first half, Plum came alive in the second half, and they were tough for us to guard. Any time that we score 80 points, that has to be a game where we find a way to win but it just didn't go the right way tonight. But, we have to get back up and we're going to see something similar against Washington State in their two good guards so we have to bounce back fast.”

ON DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES
“You score 80 points, you have to win the game; you can't give up 87 points, there are very few games that we will win that way. We just didn't do what it took on the defensive side. As a unit, there were a lot of breakdowns such as guards getting straight-line drives and we would have little to no help.”

ON G ASHLEY WILSON'S PERFORMANCE
“Ashley always has a lot of heart; she's nearing the end of her senior year and you can tell she wants to make the most out of it and that's what seniors do. They are mature and do whatever it takes to help the team win. Tonight, she [Ashley Wilson] did a great job on the offensive glass, she had some good put backs, and did pretty good job on defense.”

ON F JAMEE SWAN'S PERFORMANCE
“I thought Jamee had the same heart as Ashley [Wilson] tonight. She was aggressive; she wanted the ball on the inside; it was probably the first time where she utilized all of her offensive skills. She scored in a lot of different ways tonight.”

On Where They Lost the Game
“Definitely on the defensive end. There were times where we tied the game up but couldn't get those crucial stops, whether it was keeping them from scoring or getting a defensive rebound.”

On Team Focus

“We have to be able to bear down and understand when we need stops and to do whatever it takes to get those stops.”

On Coming Up Short In Games

“It all comes down to the same thing. We make a push and tie the game, and then we have a mental lapse where we don't get that stop or defensive rebound. It's been like that all conference season long.”

So., F Jamee Swan

On Team Focus

“I think it comes down to who wants it more and it just happens that they want it a little more than us and we lose focus.”

On Offensive Performance

“I just felt like my teammates got me the ball when I was open and I felt that without them driving, drawing, and kicking, there would be no way I could do that [score 25 points]. I didn't feel like it was just me, I felt like we were playing really well together.”

Washington Head Coach Mike Neighbors

GENERAL

“It took some warriors to win and I was just so proud of our kids up and down the bench. We get 19 (points) and 12 (rebounds) off of our bench tonight. There's been games when we have gotten zero and zero. So to get 19 and 12 tonight and on a night that we needed it, I'm just so proud with how hard these guys have been practicing and paying attention down the stretch. I was so happy for Alexus [Atchley] to get in there and not only play, but play well. Katie Collier had a tremendous night for us. Her shots were timely and her defense was incredible. Our team played really good in the second half defensively and it took a total team effort. It always does on the road and I was really proud how we finished it out.”

On the defense in the second half

“We talked about cleaning it up at halftime. We know we are not as good at that as we should be. There is only so much you can do about it when the other team is bigger and stronger and they [Colorado] are trying. They were really trying. They had a chance to come back and it took a total effort. You know, I told our post players that 'whichever one of you that can rebound is going to stay in there'. They took that and I thought that they really played that way. I was really proud of Aminah [Williams]. Her knee locked up on her in pregame and I can't even believe she played a minute, much less 16 again tonight. She didn't turn it over, got four rebounds, and made a huge three that we needed. I'm really proud that our kids could step up and play and like I said, it was a total team effort.”

On Chantel Osahor's performance

“It just keeps getting better and better. The more minutes we can get her and the more experience we can get her, I'm telling you we still haven't seen everything that she's got in her tool box. You saw a couple of great passes tonight, but she's got a chance to be a really special player for us. We needed it tonight and for her to not miss a shot and have four rebounds and only 15 minutes, not turning it over and it's hard for a post player to get an assist, but every game gets two or three. Our offense runs good when she's in the game and I'm really proud of every minute she was on the court.”

On Jamee Swan's performance

“She was on the scouting report because we recruited the heck out of that kid. We wanted her very badly. It came down to us and Colorado. So we knew fully well. She got it really going and we didn't have a lot to answer. 25 points in 18 minutes, I'm just glad she had five fouls, otherwise she could have had 50 [points].”
