Saarel, Coleman Pick Up AOTW Honors

BOULDER - Track and field's Ben Saarel and women's golfer Jenny Coleman were awarded CU Athlete of the Week on Wednesday for the week of March 10 - 16. 

Saarel, a freshman from Park City, Utah (Park City), earned First Team All-America honors over the weekend, placing third in the men's 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Albuquerque, NM. Saarel crossed the finish line in 8 minutes, 13.45 seconds to earn the bronze medal. He was just .37 seconds away from taking second. 

Coleman, a senior from Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. (Palos Verdes Peninsula), shot 2-under par 214 (69-70-75) to hold the top spot in the second round of the Clover Cup over the weekend in Mesa, Ariz. The sixth top 5 performance of her career, Coleman's 3-under par 69 to begin the tournament was her best round of the spring season. With nine total birdies in the tournament, Coleman moved her career total to a program-best 299.

Also nominated for this week's award: Askia Booker (men's basketball), Yannik Paul (men's golf) and Shalaya Kipp (track and field). 

Booker, a junior guard, led Colorado in scoring during all three games at the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas. Averaging 16.7 points per game, Booker helped lead the Buffaloes to a semifinal appearance against the Arizona Wildcats. For his efforts, Booker was named to the conference All-Tournament team. 

Paul, a freshman, led the Buffaloes to a fourth place finish in the Bandon Dunes Championship, tying for a 15th place finish with a 71-72-76--219 scorecard (6-over par) on the 6,603-yard, par-71 Pacific Dunes Course layout.  He had the third most birdies in the field for the week with 12. 

Kipp, a senior, earned her first NCAA Indoor Track and Field All-America honor after placing seventh in the women's 5,000-meter run on Friday night at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Kipp finished the 5k in 16 minutes, 32.03 seconds. The All-America honor is the eighth for Kipp as she is a three-time All-American on the outdoor track (all in the 3,000-meter steeplechase) and is a four-time All-American in cross country.
