Track Trio Wins CU Athlete of The Week
March 26, 2014 | General, Track and Field
BOULDER-- A tie in the men's 10,000-meter run and the crushing of a school record gave the University of Colorado Buffaloes three winners for Athlete of the Week honors for the week of March 17-23, 2014.
Pierce Murphy and Morgan Pearson finished the 10K run as part of the Jerry Quiller Classic in 30 minutes, 20.57 seconds to win the race, a rare distance race run at altitude. The altitude conversion time for a 10K run at Boulder's elevation is 64 seconds, bringing the winning time down to 29:16. With or without that conversion, the time is the fastest in NCAA outdoor competition this season. In fact, CU's Ammar Moussa ranks third fastest this season with his time of 30:38.83 run in the same meet.
Emily Hunsucker began her season in style, breaking her own school record in the hammer throw by more than five feet in the same meet. An All-American in 2013, she opened the day with a personal best throw of 212 feet, 11 inches. Her throw is also tops in the NCAA this outdoor season by two feet and betters her personal best of 207-10 by more than five feet. She topped the 200-foot mark on all five throws and tossed better than 212 feet three times. The next closest competitor threw a mark of 179-6.
Murphy and Hunsucker previously won CU Athlete of the Week together one time, exactly one year ago on March 19, 2013. Hunsucker also won on April 2, 2013. Pearson won the award for the first time.
Others nominated for CU Athlete of the Week were:
Josh Scott, Men's Basketball
Scott led the Buffs with 14 points and six rebounds as CU fell to Pittsburgh, 77-48, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Orlando. It marked the 11th time he led the team in both scoring and rebounding in the game. The Buffs ended their season at 23-12.
Arielle Roberson, Women's Basketball
Roberson averaged 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in leading the Buffs to a pair of postseason WNIT wins as the Buffs advanced to the Sweet 16. She had 18 points and hit 6-of-8 from the field in CU's first round win over TCU and then recorded her seventh double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds in a second-round win over Southern Utah, when she also collected a career and team season high five blocks and had a pair of steals.
Johanna Fusco, Women's Lacrosse
Fusco scored a career high four goals in CU's 11-8 loss to Brown on Saturday at CU's Kittredge Field. The Buffs fell behind 10-0 and then ended the game on an 8-1 run, which half those goals scored by Fusco, including three goals in a two minute span to bring CU with four goals. Two of those three were off free position shots and she also tied a team-high with two draw controls.
