Steur, Hurysz Claim Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER - Tennis player Julyette Steur and track and field middle distance runner Jake Hurysz were awarded CU Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the week of Feb. 24 - March 2.
Steur, a junior from Apeldoorn, Netherlands (Gymnasium Apeldoorn), won a pair of singles and doubles matches in Colorado's 1-1 week at Albuquerque, N.M. Steur won her 14th and 15th singles matches on the year, defeating New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova 6-2, 6-4, and Ball State's Courtney Wild, 6-3, 6-0. The win over Wild clinched the Buffaloes 6-1 win over the Cardinals. Steur teamed up with Ashley Tiefel twice over the weekend on the doubles court, securing two victories for the Buffs. The duo defeated UNM's Dulski/Olivier, 8-6, then two days later defeated Rang/Wild of Ball State 8-3. Steur and Tiefel have won a team-best 13 doubles matches for the No. 54 nationally ranked Buffaloes (7-4).
Hurysz, a junior from Mebane, N.C. (Eastern Alamance/UNC) placed second in the 3,000-meter run at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in Seattle on Saturday. Completeing the race in 7 minutes, 50.50 seconds, he improved on his previous personal best of 7:59.89 that he set just two weeks ago at the Husky Classic. His PR moved him up from 10th on CU's all-time performers list, to second all-time behind Olympian Adam Goucher (7:46.03). His time of 7:50.50 ranks third in the NCAA and solidified his trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 14-15.
Also nominated for this week's award: Arielle Roberson (women's basketball), Carrie Verdon (track and field) and Josh Scott (men's basketball).
Roberson, a sophomore forward, recorded a pair of double figure rebounding efforts as the Buffs split at home this week. Roberson had game highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds in Colorado's 20-point win over UCLA. It was her sixth double-double of the season. In a loss to USC, Roberson had a game-high 10 rebounds, her eighth double-figure rebounding effort of the season and third straight (10.3 rpg). She also had four points, two assists and two steals against the Trojans.
Verdon, a sophomore distance runner, led the Buffs on Friday night as she raced to a runner-up finish in the 5,000-meter run on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships in Seattle. Verdon finished in 16 minutes, 31.69 second, and was just behind Utah's Rebekah Winterton (16:30.51). Verdon's first 5k of the season, she improved her personal best from 2013, in which she ran the event in 16:47.36.
Scott, a sophomore forward, scored a team-high 17 points and had seven rebounds in Colorado's 75-64 loss at Utah. It was the ninth time this season he has led the team in both points and rebounds. He was 4-of-7 from the field, the 18th time this season he has converted over 50 percent of his shots in a game.
