CU-DU Quotes

Colorado Head Coach Danny Sanchez

On The Finals Minutes Of The Game
“Well you know I liked how we bounced back after giving up that late goal.  Their senior center back had a great strike to tie it, and sometimes you can hang your head and I liked how we responded.  The ball came into Brie and she chipped a nice ball into Emily, and Emily hustled and put herself into a dangerous position to earn the penalty kick.  I'm real pleased with that and I'm pleased with the composure that Darcy showed because after having to sub the keeper, you have to wait, good composure to finish it off.”

On The Play Of Colorado's Back Line
“We did well.  We gave up that early opportunity where Kate made the big save about ten minutes into the game.  And after that I felt pretty good, most of the stuff was long distance.  They had a couple of balls in the box, and we didn't give up a lot of corner kicks or free kicks.  There was only about seven fouls in the game so as competitive as the match was, I felt both teams played very hard and very clean.  We didn't give up a lot, now we didn't create a ton either, it was a typical derby were two teams are battling.  And like I told the team before the game it was going to be a one goal game.”

On Focusing On Set Pieces During Practice
“We didn't get one, so I think it's just part of the game.  I don't know if we focused anymore on it, but it's all about good service and being in the right spot so I thought we executed that one.  I thought we had a couple other second half chances off set pieces, so I thought we did pretty well. Today was a big game and it was decided by moments like that, and I was pleased that we were able to get a couple.”

On Changing The Formation For This Game
“We bounced back and forth a little bit with it.  I still think we are a work in progress going forward.  But I felt it matched up better with DU early and then in the second half we primarily played 4-3-3, to try and limit their outside backs from getting forward and I thought we did a good job of that.  We dropped in a little too deep toward the end when they got their goal, but they were also leaving Brie up top 1 vs 1. So it was a risk on their part and we just didn't punish them to get that second goal.  Also their keeper made a couple of really good saves when it was 1-0.”

On The Play Of The Back Line And The Play Of Kate Scheele Over The Last Couple Games
“It was a solid effort today.  I thought Joss [Orajel] did well and Bianca [Jones] was her usual solid self.  I thought Tori [Cooper] and Alex [Huynh] dealt with the stuff they had to deal with, and didn't let them really ever get behind us.  Like it was said earlier the shot was a great shot.  It wasn't a great look but it was a great shot.  At some point you concede that to a good player.  And like I said I was pleased on how we bounced back after that goal.”

On The Importance Of Defeating DU The Last Two Meetings
“Well Denver's a great program.  They will go to the NCAA tournament again this year out of their league.  We had lost four in a row until the NCAA tournament last year.  So it's just about gaining confidence.  But 1-0 and 2-1, it's a big turning point I don't think it matters what the records of both teams are.  This game will always be like this and these are the games we need to win.  Because like I told the team this is like a Pac-12 game as far as intensity and focus and we are glad that we got the win.”

On Colorado Being Ready For Pac-12 Play
“I think we are still a work in progress.  But we have made some progress and we are getting there. Today was a game we needed to win.  Especially at home and I was pleased to get the win.”

Colorado Forward Tori Cooper

On Her Goal Scored Off A Corner Kick
“We had been working a lot on set pieces in practices and I had kind of been unlucky in front of the goal.  But Kahlia [Hogg] had a great corner kick and she found me right there were I'm supposed to be. I was just paying attention to detail on where I need to be on those set pieces because those are usually game changers. I just took it [the ball] and put it where it needed to be and got it in plain and simple.”

On Her First Goal With Colorado
“When I was at Georgia I had one against Florida.  But it felt great, especially coming full circle  since I'm a senior and we were playing against DU. To get the goal off a set piece was pretty much the way I wanted my first goal here to be.”

On The Importance Of Keeping The Play As Far From Goalkeeper Kate Scheele As Possible
“That was huge, you know defense wins championships.  We are doing our best to just stay strong back there and stay organized.  We had to pick our moments when to step, when not to step and when to drop off.  Also, winning the tackles is really big.”

On Kate Scheele's Play
“Kate keeps it so composed back there.  We are so lucky to have her and I'm so glad she transferred here.  She made an awesome save in the first half facing a 1 vs. 1. Those are just the type of saves she makes.  That's what big time goal keepers do, which gives us really good momentum going into Pac-12 play.”

About The Difference Defensively Between The Kansas Game This Game
“I'd say we were just tighter back there.  You know we broke down the film and we just stayed organized.  Alex and I have really been trying to focus on stepping together.  Everyone in general was on their game and paying attention to detail. I think that just the small things are what counts.  I think during the Kansas game we weren't as organized out of our midfield at times, and our defense would sometimes get split.  I think it all came together today for a full ninety minutes.”
