Lee, Henderson Pick Up CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- The University of Colorado sophomore Esther Lee (women's golf) and senior Greg Henderson (football) earned CU Athlete of the Week honors Wednesday for their play during the week of September 15-21.
Lee played an important role in the University of Colorado women's golf team's second place finish at the Minnesota Invitational last week in Minneapolis, Minn. She finished tied for eighth overall with a 75-76-71:222, or 6-over par for the tournament and had the best individual score for the Buffs. Colorado tied a school record with four players finishing in the top 15 and was the only team to accomplish such a feat in the tournament. The newcomer was the only player in the field to card a sub-par round in the final 18 holes, recording a 1-under 71.
In playing all 78 snaps from scrimmage in Colorado's 21-12 win over Hawai'i, Henderson recorded eight tackles, six solo, one for a quarterback sack), along with a forced fumble, a recovery, four passes broken up, two third down stops, a quarterback hurry and one tackle for zero. He earned four of those stats on one play: in the first quarter with Hawai'i driving with a 3rd-and-7 at the CU 21, he blitzed, sacked UH QB Ikaika Woolsey, forced him to fumble and was able to somehow also recover it (so, he had a QBS, FF, FR and a 3DS on the same play). The play helped Colorado hold an opponent to no touchdowns for the first time in 51 games (the 2010 season opener).
This was the first award of the season for both athletes.
Also nominated for this week's honor: Taylor Simpson (volleyball) and Brie Hooks (soccer).
Simpson, senior, was named to the Creighton Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 5.00 kills, 3.27 digs and 0.73 blocks per set while hitting .295. Simpson recorded 19 kills in the four-set loss to South Dakota and added 11 digs and three blocks. Against No. 16 Illinois, she had 18 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Simpson again notched 18 kills against Creighton, in addition to 13 digs and two blocks.
Hooks, sophomore, helped the Buffs go undefeated over the weekend with a strong offensive performance in both matches as CU extended its winning streak to four straight games, the longest of the season. On Friday, Hooks recorded two shots with one on goal in the Buffs 2-0 win over the Bryant Bulldogs. She continued her impressive play on Sunday, scoring one goal and picking up two assists on five shots against the San Francisco Dons. Hooks was one of two Buffaloes who were involved in all three scoring plays in the match. The forward from Maple Valley, Wash. had an assist on CU's first goal, scored the second and assisted again on the third marker. Hooks' goal was her third of the year and gave the Buffs a 2-0 lead early in the second period as the Buffs would go on to shutout USF 3-0.
