Steur Wins Opening Fall Match; Doubles Wins Twice

September 26, 2014 | Tennis

BOULDER – University of Colorado senior Julyette Steur opened her 2014 fall season winning her 44th career singles match with a straight set victory on the opening day of bracket play of the Colorado Invitational at the South Campus Courts.

Steur, who will be CU's lone participated at next week's Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in the qualifying singles draw in Los Angeles, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 straight set winner over junior Flavia Araujo of Arkansas.

The singles win was Steur's 35th career straight set winner as a Buff and with her pair of doubles victories on Thursday, moves her into 30th place on the all-time list of combined singles and doubles wins with 82.

On the doubles court, CU made it a Buffaloes sweep of their two matches on Friday improving to 6-0 over the two days so far.

CU swept a pair from Southern Illinois as junior Alex Aiello and freshman Tina Bokhua defeated Yana Golovkina/Vitoria Beirao, 8-2. It was the first career match playing together for the CU duo.

In the other doubles match, senior Ashley Tiefel and sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz, also teamed up for the very first time, defeating Hannah Wich and Gisela Baza, also by an identical 8-2 margin.

The six-team invitational features the Buffaloes, Arkansas, Liberty, New Mexico, Southern Illinois and Utah.

“We are really seeing some good things, where we need to continue to improve,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We have done a great job with the fundamentals in doubles and the players have shown great flexibility, as we continue to switch the pairings around. We will continue to test different pairings on Saturday for the last two rounds of doubles.

“Singles we battled hard today, but lost a couple of tough ones. We had our opportunities, but wasn't able to convert.  The value of this happening early in the season is good as we can continue to work on the specifics during practice time.  We are getting a lot of highly competitive matches, which is what we want and need early in the fall season.”

Saturday's play begins with singles beginning at 8:30 a.m. with doubles to follow.

For those spectators attending Saturday, there's also a high school cross country meet taking place near the tennis courts surroundings. The access road to the CU South Tennis Courts through the green gate will be unavailable from 9 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m.

Tennis fans planning to arrive during this time will need to park on the grass field and walk into the courts from there. Also please note, if you have your car inside the courts before 9 a.m., you will not be able to exit the facility in a car after approximately 12:30 p.m.
