Golfers Finish Eighth In N.M.; Host Simpson Next
September 27, 2014 | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't make a move here Saturday and finished where it started the day, in eighth place in the 60th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational.
Host and No. 33 New Mexico led from wire-to-wire, despite falling victim to its own tough course settings in the final round; the Lobos had played each of the first two rounds at 11-under par, but closed with a 7-over 295 in the third round for an overall total of 849, or 15-under par. That was still good for a 15-stroke victory over No. 16 Texas Tech, which finished at even-par (864).
San Diego State grabbed third (873), and TCU moved from ninth into a tie for fourth with an 880 score, as the Horned Frogs managed the only under-par round Saturday (2-under 286), which enabled them to catch New Mexico State.
No. 20 Colorado, which was fourth after the first round but slipped into eighth after 36 holes, got as high as a tie for sixth during the final round, but also slipped as low as 10th until finishing back in eighth with a 31-over 895 team score.
The average final round score was 77.27, well over the 74.96 average for the first two rounds; there were just five rounds under par 70 (none in the 60s), while only three others equaled it.
Sophomore Jeremy Paul paced the Buffaloes for a second straight meet, and for the 10th time in his young career. After opening with rounds of 70 and 73 , he closed with a 6-over 78, as he had rather pedestrian final round of 12 pars and six bogeys, giving him a 5-over 221 total course layout. That tied him for 17th individually.
The best effort by a Buff in the final round came from sophomore Yannik Paul, who logged one of those five scores under-par; his 1-under 71 came on the strength of four birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys. He tied for 28th overall with a 7-over 223 score.
Senior David Oraee closed with a 2-over 74, giving him an 11-over 227 total for the tournament, which tied him for 41st. He bounced back from a second round 80 with what proved to be the 13th best final round score in the 92-man field.
Both Pauls and Oraee tied for the team-lead with eight birdies, while Jeremy Paul had a team-best 34 pars, with his younger twin had 32 and Oraee 30.
Sophomore Ethan Freeman tied for 55th after recording a 7-over 79 Saturday; he had a single birdie and 10pars against six bogeys and a double – the latter his only one of the tournament. He had four birdies overall and 33 pars, the second-most by a Buffalo here.
Junior Philip Juel-Berg endured a second consecutive tough tournament, wrapping things up with an 11-over 83 for a 237 total, some 21-over par. He had a birdie and eight pars against three bogeys and a double on Saturday; he managed just two birdies over the entire three rounds, though he did score CU's only eagle here (in the second round).
Junior Drew Trujillo competed here individually, meaning his scores don't count toward the team total; he had a rocky finish after strong start, closing with an 11-over 83 for a 13-over 229, tying him for 51st. He had nine pars, eight bogeys and a triple to close out play. He went into the final round with six birdies, the second-most on the team.
“The golf course played extremely difficult today,´ ,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Yannik played a very good round and David was solid. The other guys had rough days. While the tournament was not our best, we still beat some good teams.
“We have to be mentally strong and move on quickly playing at home. It will be a great test and one I am confident we are ready for.”
New Mexico's Gavin Green held on to his second round lead and claimed medalist honors, as he finished up with an even-par 72 for a 9-under 207 total. That was good for a three-shot win over a pair of Texas Tech golfers, Clement Sordet and Guillermo Pereira.
The Buffaloes return home to host the Fifth Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational this coming Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 29-30) at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.
