Golfers Open Season With Runner-Up Finish At AFA

USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team turned in the best round of the tournament here Sunday but came up just short of the title in finishing second in the 46th Annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational.
Nevada-Las Vegas led from wire-to-wire in winning with an 838 team score (26-under par), but had to withstand a Sunday charge from the Buffaloes. The Rebels entered the day with a 13-stroke lead and led early on by as many as 16, only to see CU pull to within two late in the round. Eventually, the margin settled at four, with Colorado closing with 22-under 842 score.
Colorado State (856), New Mexico State (865) and Southern Utah (869) rounded out the top five.
“A really good round today from the team, but unfortunately we came up just short,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “I am really proud of the way the guys competed and played. It's always a good sign when you go out and shoot low the score of the tournament in the final round, the confidence that you gain from that.
“It was a great run, I'm really proud of how they competed and played. I believe we have a really good team, we're going to play a lot of the top teams in the country this year, so this was a good start to the season.”
Colorado had all six of its roster members competing here this weekend, with the five designated scorers all finishing in the top 29 in the 88-man field.
Leading the way were sophomore twins, Yannik and Jeremy Paul. Yannik tied for runner-up honors with a 9-under 207 after carding a 70 Sunday, while Jeremy zoomed into a fifth place finish with the day's best round, a 7-under 65, to finish with a 210 total (minus-6) on the 7,420-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Golf Club course layout. Yannik had five birdies and 13 pars Sunday, while Jeremy had an eagle, six birdies and 10 pars against a single bogey Sunday.
Senior David Oraee tied for seventh, fashioning an even-par 72 to finish with a 4-under 212; he was in contention for a top five finish after a second round 67 but was undone a bit by a double bogey on No. 15 and then a bogey on No. 16, although he got that stroke back with a birdie on No. 17 before finishing up with a par.
Sophomore Ethan Freeman fired a 70 to finish with a 1-under 215, tying for 16th place. He had four birdies and 13 pars with a double bogey preventing him from being a third Buff to score in the 60s.
Junior Philip Juel-Berg struggled in the final round, closing with a 76 as he had four birdies, six pars and eight bogeys in a bit of a wild ride Sunday as he eventually finished with a 3-over 219 that tied him for 29th.
Drew Trujillo played here as an individual, closing with a 3-over 75 for a 224 total, tying him for 50th place. He had nine birdies and 32 pars for the weekend.
UNLV's Taylor Montgomery claimed medalist honors, carding a 1-under 71 Sunday to finish with a 10-under 206.
“We got a lot of good head-to-head wins here,” Edwards added. “Jeremy and Yannik played wonderful today, and Ethan had a good final round and was consistent throughout. Others had a few tough moments, but everyone recorded at least one subpar round so we're off and running.”
The Buffs will turn right around and compete this Friday through Sunday in the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Intercollegiate.
