UCLA - CU Quotes

Head Coach Liz Kritza

On The Difference In Play From USC (Friday Night):

“I think after this epic, high-level match Friday night (#1 USC), there was a physical component of fatigue. That is something that, as high level players, you have to deal with. Recovering quickly and coming back after a taxing match is important. The biggest thing is that we know we are capable of playing at the highest level with any team. When we don't, I think there is some frustration that sets in and it gets us off our normal pace. I think that is really what it was.”

On Stopping #2 Jordan Anderson (20 kills .444 hitting) And The Problem She Presented:

“Coming in, we knew she was going to have her kills. She leads her team and she is averaging 5 kills a set, and does a ton for them. For us, we needed to minimize her slightly more. She went for 20 kills tonight and we could have done a better job on her but one player doesn't make a team. We were able to neutralize the team Friday night, and their star player, and everybody else rose to the occasion. Had we been able to do a little better job on number two you would have seen a different result in that first set. You would have seen closer scores in the other sets too. It wasn't necessarily anything volleyball specific, or any strategic piece of the match, it was merely how we didn't attack first and we didn't side out like we needed to. When that happened the score ends up lopsided and you end up on the losing side; that is just volleyball. If you can't keep pace you are choosing the hard way to play. Quite honestly, I have more confidence in my players than ever before. We will be absolutely fine. We have to tweak a few things, we are going to recover and come back. We have two more tough teams coming in here and our focus has to be making sure we take care of business and respect our home court better than we have been.”

Player Quotes

Cierra Simpson

On Team's Energy

“I think the spark we had on Friday night wasn't really there. There were traces of it in the first set, but from what it felt like, we fell flat after the first set. Maybe we got discouraged a little bit after losing a deuce set. We have to learn from that and correct it for next weekend.”

On Team's Adjustments For Next Week

“As Coach [Kritza] said, I think resting and recovering both physically and mentally is going to be a huge thing for us; and taking the scouting report seriously, honing in on what they do, because that seemed to work for us against USC despite that we didn't get the outcome we wanted. I felt like we were able to slow them down in a lot of areas.”

Gabby Simpson

On Team's Energy

“We didn't start off strong; we didn't start off the way we wanted to, and that led to the result of the match.”

On Team's Adjustments For Next Week

“I think finding the spark for both games, not just for one.”

Nicole Edelman

On Team's Energy

“I think, also, it was difficult, compared to Friday, to get into a rhythm especially offensively when they're passing. That puts a lot of pressure on us in those aspects. We need to find a way to get into a rhythm early, so we can keep going and win those sets.”

On Team's Adjustments For Next Week

“Like Cierra [Simpson] said, I would definitely say rest and recovery. I think, also, as long as we take care of our side of the net against anyone that we play, we're in good shape. I think it's just focusing on the little adjustments – everyone can do something better – and be ready for next weekend. ”
