FINAL

The Buffs D did what it had to do, getting the offense the ball back with just over two minutes left.  The offense was moving the ball and Liufau stayed in the game despite banging up his shoulder.  He was roughed up and CU got a first down at its 30, then two plays later Liufau was picked off for the second time and out of timeouts, UCLA was able to go into victory formation.

----------

3:34 Fourth quarter

The Buffs D held strong, and the offense was marching down the field for a go-ahead TD but after a long try at a TD on first down, the Buffs ground out 6 yards on second and third down, then a pressure of Liufau on fourth down caused a loss on a completion, and UCLA took the ball back with 3:34 left in the game.

----------

8:28 Fourth quarter

The Buffs couldn't get anything going on the offensive end, then UCLA went to work and quickly scored in four plays, going 69 yards in just 27 seconds.  Rosen completed passes to Payton for 26 yards and Duarte for 38 before Jamabo went in from 2 yards out.

----------

12:04 Fourth quarter

It took the Buffs just 24 seconds to take their first lead of the game. Sefo hit Devin Ross for 62 yards after UCLA jumped offsides.  Then in heads up fashion not knowing if Ross had lost the ball, the Buffs get to the line, snap the ball and freshman Patrick Carr scored his first collegiate touchdown from 6 yards out.

Then the Buffs, only up 1, go for the two-point conversion and Liufau threw a beautiful pass to Spruce in the back corner of the end zone for the three point advantage.

----------

12:28 Fourth quarter

The Buffs defense did exactly what they had to do, giving up one first down but clinching down and getting the ball back to the offense. Derek McCartney, who was banged up earlier in the game, made the third down stop.

----------

14:37 Fourth quarter

TOUCHDOWN BUFFS! Eddy Lopez stripped the ball and Samson Kafovalu was in the right place at the right time, scooping it up and taking it 33 yards to bring the Buffs within one score at 28-23.  A huge play for the Buffs defense and putting the Buffs right back in the thick of this game.

----------

1:03 Third quarter

After holding the UCLA offnese to a three-and-out, the Buffs picked up a few first downs and Diego Gonzalez nailed a 45-yard field goal to bring the Buffs within 12 points at 28-16 near the end of the third quarter.

----------

4:30 Third quarter

The Buffs picked up a couple first downs and flipped the field before having to punt.  A nice punt from Kinney pins the Bruins at their 5-yardline.

----------

7:35 Third quarter

After a big statistical first half that was disappointing on the scoreboard, the Buffs left nothing to chance on their first possession of the third quarter. CU took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards to the end zone on eight plays, all running plays.

Donovan Lee carried three times for 27 yards, including the 1-yard touchdown run. Patrick Carr ran three times for 34 yards and Phillip Lindsay twice for 10 yards on the drive. l

Lee's score cut UCLA's lead to 21-13, and on the ensuing kickoff, UCLA's Stephen Johnson fumbled and CU's Jered Bell recovered. CU's Jaleel Awini forced the fumble.

The Buffs, though, couldn't take advantage of the turnover, and the Bruins finally cranked up their offense, driving 81 yards for a touchdown in six plays. The big play of the drive was a 51-yard Josh Rosen pass to Jordan Payton. Nate Starks carried in from 11 yards out with 7:35 left in the third quarter and the Ka'imi Fairbairn PAT gave the Bruins a 28-13 lead

----------

HALFTIME

The Colorado Buffs rang up some incredibly impressive statistics in the first half against UCLA, but had only six points to show for their efforts, as a UCLA interception deep in CU territory for a touchdown and a CU missed field goal gave the Bruins a 21-6 lead at the half.

The Buffs ran 61 offensive plays in the first half for 278 yards. Quarterback Sefo Liufau was 22-for-35 for 172 yards and the Buffs ran for 106 yards, with Liufau leading with 37.

In the second quarter, Colorado ran an astounding 40 plays from scrimmage while the Bruins had just four — but one of CU's offensive snaps was a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown by UCLA's Ishmael Adams and one of UCLA's plays was an 82-yard touchdown run from Paul Perkins.

Overall, CU had a 278-197 edge in offensive yards, a 22:14 to 7:46 edge in time of possession and a 61-21 edge in plays from scrimmage, but still trailed. The Buffs penetrated the UCLA 20 four times, including three trips inside the 10, but never reached the end zone.

CU had 14:03 of possession in the second quarter; UCLA had the ball for 57 seconds and outscored CU 14-6.

---------

HALFTIME

Colorado once again put together a long, sustained drive before having to settle for a field goal.

The Buffs drove 72 yards in 13 plays, with Donovan Lee notching a 21-yard run and Sefo Liufau completing passes of 7 and 11 yards to Shay Fields and 4 yards to Nelson Spruce.

The drive, however, stalled at the UCLA 6, and on fourth down, the Buffs kicked a field goal as time ran out to cut UCLA's lead to 21-6.

---------

3:09 remaining second quarter

The Buffs finally got on the board with 3:29 left in the half with a 25-yard Diego Gonzalez field goal, but UCLA quickly answered.

CU drove 57 yards in 11 plays, getting a 35-yard Sefo Liufau pass to Sean Irwin and a 10-yard pass to Nelson Spruce. CU again stalled inside the UCLA 10-yard line, but cut the UCLA lead to 14-3.

The Bruins, though, quickly answered. After the kick return, Paul Perkins went 82 yards to the end zone as UCLA took a 21-3 lead just 20 seconds after CU's score. It was Perkins' second long touchdown run against the Buffs in his career; as he had a 92-yard TD run a year ago.

---------

6:55 remaining second quarter

The Buffs finally appeared ready to put points on the board before disaster struck.

After a UCLA punt, the Buffs took possession at their own 33 , with the offense getting a little pep talk from head coach Mike MacIntyre before they took the field.

The Buffs finally moved the chains, getting a 7-yard pass on third down from Sefo Liufau to Donovan Lee, then continued to drive downfield. Patrick Carr had three straight runs for 19 yards, and the Buffs drove to a first-and-goal from the UCLA 6 before a backbreaking turn of events.

On second down,  Lee was thrown for a 5-yard loss before a third-down pass intended for Devin Ross was picked off and returned 96 yards for a touchdown by UCLA's Ishmael Adams.

UCLA took a 14-0 lead with 7:01 left in the second quarter as CU's second 16-play drive of the day produced no points.

 ----------

Beginning of second quarter

After a missed field goal by the Buffs, CU's defense forced a three-and-out from the Bruins and a punt gave the Buffs the ball at the UCLA 30.

The Buffs though, couldn't generate enough offense to move the sticks. CU missed a third-down conversion, leaving the Buffs just 2-for-6 in that category for the day, and Alex Kinney was called on to punt again. Kinney kicked the ball off the side of his foot but got a nice roll and a 42-yard net.

UCLA took possession with 14:13 left in the second quarter.

----------------

2:06 remaining 1st quarter

After UCLA's first score of the day, Colorado drove from its own 25 to the UCLA 18 before settling for a field goal try. Diego Gonzalez' 35-yard attempt was wide right, however, and the Buffs came away empty and UCLA held on to its 7-0 lead.

The Buffs converted a fourth-down try on the drive when UCLA was called for defensive holding. QB Sefo Liufau, who was under heavy pressure for much of the drive, completed passes of 10 yards to Phillip Lindsay, 8 yards to Bryce Bobo and 17 to Shay Fields on the drive.

---------------

Buffs collected their first big break of the day when LB Rick Gamboa intercepted a Josh Rosen pass, who was under heavy pressure, but the play was reviewed by officials and overturned.

UCLA converted two big plays on the possession, overcoming a second-and-15 with a 27-yard Rosen pass to Jordan Payton; then a 31-yard touchdown pass from Rosen to Perkins on third-and-14. Perkins broke a couple of tackles and had a great run after catch on the play. The drive covered 91 yards in 11 plays, as UCLA took a 7-0 lead with 8:01 left in the first quarter.

---------------

12:08 remaining, 1st quarter

The first two possessions for both teams ended in a punt. Buffs forced a three-and-out from UCLA, then got a couple first downs, the first on a Sefo Liufau pass to Nelson Spruce; the second on a 12-yard pass from Liufau to Donovan Lee

But the drive stalled near midfield after three straight incompletions. An Alex Kinney punt put UCLA back at the Bruins' 9-yard line.

Kinney had nine punts inside the opponent 20 in his last four games; he already has one today.

-------------

Buffs win toss and defer; they'll send their defense on the field first. CU should see quickly how healthy UCLA running back Paul Perkins is.

-----------------

Buffs are 2-18-1 all-time in the state of California. Their last win in Cali? A 2002 victory by Gary Barnett's Buffs over UCLA, 31-17. That was also the last time the Buffs picked up a victory over a ranked team on the road, a stretch of 24 games.

If you're looking for an omen, figure this: Barnett is in the house again today, serving as color commentator for KOA radio.

Barnett will join Mark Johnson in the booth today, and he'll follow Larry Zimmer permanently in the role beginning next season

Barnett will also work the Nov. 13 USC game in Boulder.

Gametime official weather: 87 degrees, 13 percent humidity and no measurable wind.

-------------------

Roughly 30 minutes before kickoff at the Rose Bowl. Temperature already about 84 degrees, with a high of 88 in the forecast. CU coaches and trainers spent the week emphasizing hydration, and it's a good thing. It's probably another 5 to 10 degrees warmer on the field.

On the field, Buffs WR Shay Fields was warming up and running routes with no apparent problems from the ankle injury suffered a couple of weeks ago. Fields looked good in practice this week for the Buffs and has said he's ready to go.

Also, RT Sam Kronshage will start for Colorado.

For UCLA, RB Paul Perkins was also warming up and looked ready to play.
