Buffs, No. 19 Washington Battle To 1-1 Draw

October 09, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against 19th-ranked Washington here on Friday afternoon in a tough Pac-12 Conference battle at Prentup Field.

The Huskies converted on their only shot on goal in the first half to take the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Washington (9-2-2, 2-1-1 Pac-12) played a short corner kick and then sent the ball near the top of the '18 before playing it back inside the box. Colorado goalkeeper Scout Watson stepped out to try and clear it, but Washington's Shannon Simon was in position to head it to Kimberly Keever who put it in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

"Washington is a very good team, very good in the back," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We were disappointed to give up that goal early, we just didn't defend that corner well. Having said that, I felt the rest of the first half we really put them under a lot of pressure. We played a lot of players, we kept the players fresh and the players were committed to playing both sides of the ball."

Colorado (7-4-2, 1-2-1 Pac-12) controlled the run of play during the remainder of the first period, creating multiple opportunities and outshooting the Huskies 7-4 while putting three shots on frame.  Senior Madi Krauser had one of those shots on goal in the 22nd minute. She made a run down the right side and launched a shot, forcing Kufeld to make the save and then junior Brie Hooks had a quick one-touch into the box and freshman Stephanie Zuniga challenged Kufeld, but the Washington goalkeeper was just one step ahead to take the ball away.

The Buffaloes came with the same pressure after halftime and scored the equalizer at the 57:55 mark on a set piece behind Heather Ward's first goal of the season. Sophomore Joss Orejel drilled a corner kick into a crowded goal box and Ward was in position to head it home, tying the contest at one all. Orejel recorded her third assist of the year, which tied her single-season career-high.

"We've been working on set pieces a lot this week and just focusing on having the right plays and where to put the ball," said Ward. "It's always a tough battle in the box, fighting against everybody else. Joss just had a great ball; it was an in-swinger that was perfect on the back six and I was just able to get an inside position and head it into the net."

The Colorado attack outshot Washington 20-13 in the match and put nine shots on frame compared to the Huskies' five over the 110 minutes of play.

"I think we created more chances today than we did in both games last weekend by far" said Sanchez.

Watson made her first career start on Friday and finished with four saves. She had two crucial stops down the stretch allowing the match to reach overtime. In the 75th minute, Keever fired a shot that was about to fall in just under the crossbar, but Watson reached up to tip the ball over the top. Then two minutes before the end of regulation, Watson grabbed the ball just before it was about to cross the goal line.

"There was a lot of different emotions," said Watson when describing her first start. "In the beginning I was a little shaky and not as loud as I am at practice, but I definitely calmed down as the game went on. Getting your hands on the ball or just getting a pass back just made me feel more comfortable in the game and then getting some big saves is a really good feeling. Credit to the rest of my team and coaches for giving me confidence and coming up to me and telling me 'you got this,' never putting a doubt in my mind."

In overtime, Colorado tallied two shots and Washington had five, but neither team could find the game-winner before time expired. Watson had one save over the 20 extra minutes of play and once again came up with a pivotal stop when the Huskies' Rachel Wheeler had a breakaway. Watson came off her line to challenge the ball and made a slide to snag it.

Friday's contest marked the second consecutive meeting these two teams have met and the match resulted in a double-overtime draw. Last season, they match ended in a scoreless tie.

Next up, the Buffaloes face No. 21 Washington State at Prentup Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. Ralphie will be making her annual appearance and fans will have the opportunity to take photos with the CU mascot and see her run before kickoff.
