Golfers Fan and Juel-Berg Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

November 10, 2015 | Men's Golf

BOULDER -- Brittany Fan (women's golf) and Philip Juel-Berg, Sr. (men's golf) are the Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8. Fan finished in the top 15 at the Pac-12 Preview in Kona, Hawai'i, while Juel-Berg tied for eighth in UCLA's Gifford Intercollegiate.

This week was Fan's second top 15 finish of the season. The sophomore helped the Buffaloes place fourth overall in their final tournament of the fall season. She shot 3-over par (222) and her 56-hole performance was highlighted by her final round 1-under par as she was one of only two Buffs to record a sub-par round in the tournament. Fan finished the event with five birdies and led the 59-player field with 42 total pars.

Juel-Berg entered the final round of the Gifford Intercollegiate in contention for medalist honors, and was 1-under through four holes. But a double bogey on No. 5 followed by a bogey placed him on the wrong side of par, and then two more boges in his next four holes ended his chase for top honors. But he still tied for eighth in one of the fall's strongest fields after carding a 1-over 69-70-75—214 scorecard on the 6,996-yard, par-71 La Costa Legends Course. He scored the most birdies in the 81-man field (14) in recording the ninth top 10 finish of his career, three of which came this fall.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Alexis Austin (volleyball) and Tedric Thompson, Jr. (football).

Austin averaged 3.57 kills per set and hit .188 last weekend. She also added 2.29 digs per set and .057 blocks per set. Austin recorded 13 kills and nine digs in the loss to No. 9 UCLA and against No. 2 Southern California, she had 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

In CU's 42-10 loss to No. 9 Stanford, Thompson recorded a team-high of 10 tackles (8 solo), and made the fourth interception of his career, the first this season, and returned it 71 yards.
