SALT LAKE CITY — Live updates from the Buffs season ending game at Utah on Nov. 28.
---------
FINAL
After scoring with 4:13 left, the Buffs didn't get the on-sides kick but held Utah in three plays and got the ball back with 2:28 left. Bryce Bobo had two straight catches after it was 3rd-and-18, including a 25-yard completion into Utah territory. From there, Gehrke was sacked and fumbled, and then Utah ran the clock out.
---------
4:13 LEFT FOURTH QUARTER
The Buffs put Jaleel Awini, a converted linebacker who played QB at Air Force before coming to CU, in and it pays off. He splits time with Gehrke, and the Buffs move down the field to score on a Gehrke-to-Lindsay 16-yard screen pass to bring it to a one-score game.
---------
11:00 LEFT FOURTH QUARTER
Jordan Gehrke picked up 8 yards on 4th-and-9 from the Buffs 29 and CU called a timeout, decided to punt, and it almost paid off as Utah muffed the punt. Utah did recover, but the Buffs held and forced a Utah punt with about 9:30 left in the game.
---------
END THIRD PERIOD
The third quarter ended with CU still trailing 20-7. The two teams traded punts and CU faced a third-and-13 from its own 23 as the game entered the fourth quarter.
---------
6:48 LEFT THIRD QUARTER
On CU's first play from scrimmage following the Utes' second touchdown of the game, Buffs quarterback Jordan Gehrke threw an interception, giving the Utes possession at the CU 28. Six plays later, Utah's Andy Phillips kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Utah a 20-7 lead.
---------
9:37 LEFT THIRD QUARTER
The Utes took the opening kickoff and drove 68 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown. The Utes converted three third downs on the drive, including a 28-yard pass from Travis Wilson to Harrison Handley on third-and-8 that put the Utes on CU's 5-yard line. Joe Williams scored on a 5-yard run on the next play and Utah took a 17-7 lead with 9:37 left in the third quarter.
----------
HALFTIME
With Utah holding 10-7 lead at half, statistics are fairly even. Utah has 199-187 yardage edge; both teams have 12 first downs. Utes have turned it over three times (two fumbles, interception); Buffs have turned it over twice (two interceptions). Biggest disparity: Utah has scored on two of three red zone chances, Buffs are 0-for-2 in the red zone (missed field goal, interception).
---------
HALFTIME
The last four minutes of the half provided plenty of action and no scoring.
Utah was forced to punt after taking the kickoff following CU's first score of the day. On the Buffs' first play of the possession, Cade Apsay threw his second interception of the day when his deep ball was tipped into the arms of Utah's Cory Butler-Byrd.
But Utah couldn't move the ball and punted again, and Jordan Gehrke came in at quarterback for the Buffs.
Gehrke drove CU to just past midfield before the drive stalled, and a CU punt gave Utah the ball at the Ute 21 with 1:01 left in the half. Joe Williams ripped off a 64-yard run for the Utes to put Utah in scoringposition, but on third down, CU was flagged for pass interference in the end zone before Utah's Kenneth Scott was called for taunting, putting the ball back on the Utah 17. Two plays later, CU's Tedric Thompson intercepted Travis Wilson, Thompson's third pick of the season. CU then ran out the clock and the Buffs entered the locker room trailing 10-7 at intermission.
----------
4:36 REMAINING 2ND QTR
The Buffs took advantage of a Utah turnover to get on the board. Following a Utah field goal and kickoff, CU failed to move the ball and punted. Utah's Bobbie Hobbs, however, fumbled and punt and CU's Jered Bell recovered, giving CU the ball at the Utah 33.
Three plays later, Cade Apsay connected with Nelson Spruce on a third-and-5 for a 28-yard touchdown pass. It was Spruce's 23rd career touchdown catch, a CU record, and the ensuing PAT cut Utah's lead to 10-7.
-------------
7:27 REMAINING 2ND QTR
After the Buffs turned it over on downs, Utah drove to the CU 19 before settling for a 37-yard field goal. The Buffs lost defensive lineman Samson Kafovalu on the drive after he was flagged for targeting and ejected after a tackle of Utes running back Joe Williams. The field goal boosted Utah's lead to 10-0.
----------
10:19 LEFT 2ND QTR
After a Utah punt, Colorado couldn't move the ball and punted to the Utah 41, where the Utes took possession.
-------
11:08 LEFT 2ND QTR
Colorado produced its first big break of the game, forcing and recovering a Joe Williams fumble near midfield. The Buffs, though, couldn't take advantage and lost possession when Cade Apsay fumbled the snap on fourth-and-1, handing the ball back to Utah.
CU's defense came up with another big stop, getting consecutive sacks of quarterback Travis Wilson from Samson Kafovalu and Jimmie Gilbert to force a Utah punt.
The Buffs took possession at their own 16-yard line.
-------
1:32 REMAINING 1ST QTR
Another trip to the Utah red zone produced zero points for the Buffs. After a 50-yard Cade Apsay pass to Nelson Spruce put the Buffs in Utah territory, an Apsay run and penalty put the ball at the Utah 6-yard line. But Phillip Lindsay lost 2 yards on first down, Apsay threw incomplete on second down and then threw an interception on third down, giving Utah possession at the UU 14-yard line.
-------------
4:45 REMAINING 1ST QTR
Colorado opened the game by taking the kickoff and driving to the Utah 8-yard line for a first and goal, but the drive stalled. Phillip Lindsay had one carry for 0 yards, Cade Apsay threw incomplete and Apsay was then sacked on third down. The Buffs then came up empty when a 31-yard field goal try by Diego Gonzalez was blocked.
The Utes responded by driving 80 yards for the first score of the game. Utah converted a third-and-10 on the march to keep the drive alive, and used 13 plays to reach the end zone. Travis Wilson threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kenneth Scott to cap the drive and Utah took a 7-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
