Chip Earns Fifth Place Video Submission For National Championships

November 06, 2015 | General

BOULDER - He's back!  After a one year hiatus from competing at the UCA National Championships, CU's two-time National Champion mascot Chip, earned a trip to the 2016 championships on the heels of a fifth place video submission, the organization announced Friday.

Only 10 mascots are selected to compete at the National Championships each year and the selection means Chip will finish in the top 10 for the 10th time in the last 16 years.  Chip won the Mascot National Championship in 2009 and '10.

"The Chips have put in so much hard work, both in performing and putting this video together," CU Spirit Coordinator Lindsey Edwards said. "They were extra motivated this year after being left out last year, and the video truly shows the spirit and enthusiasm that Chip displays all the time."

The video submission counts for 50 percent of the final score after the 90 second skit is performed in Orlando in January, where CU will send Chip and three other teams, the CU Dance Team and CU's All-Girl and Coed Cheerleading squads.

Chip will return to the national championships after not qualifying in 2015, making this year's squad even more motivated than before to earn a return trip.  Last year's team video was ranked 15th, meaning this year's video jumped up 10 spots.

The video, which is three minutes in length, is only judged for the two minutes where Chip actually performs.  Mascots are allowed to include an introduction and exit to the video that's not judged.

Chip's intro shows the mascot dressing in an astronaut uniform and then blasting off into space before a StarWars-like introduction.  The exit of the video is Chip landing from his space adventure, planting a State of Colorado flag into Folsom Field and then walking off.

In the judged part of the video, it is broken down into seconds, including campus activities, interaction with the cheerleaders, dance team and band, community service, crowd interaction and game time situations. Judges only watch the video one time before final scores are submitted.
