Colorado-Oregon State Post Game Quotes
February 22, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle
On This Game Having Similar Story Line To The Oregon Game
"It was, I mean I'm not sure I've ever coached a half where you had three baskets at halftime and it was one player that made all of them. Wesley [Gordon] had all of them and the rest of our team was 0-for-. I thought in the first half, for the most part we got good shots, we just couldn't make them. Oregon State, you have to give them credit, they're a good defensive team. Second half was a different story, we come out, we share the ball, we get it moving and we shoot 48 percent. We played well enough offensively to win the second half, but when you're down 22 at the half, we just dug ourselves to big of a whole. You turn the ball over 22 times on the opponents home floor and you have no chance, you just can't do that."
On The Inconsistencies Of The Team
"This team when it comes time to make that turn, that push, we just don't have it. Our shot selection in the second half coming down the stretch was awful, and I have to take responsibility for that. Our guys, I think would know by late February what a good shot and what a bad shot is, and we took too many bad shots. We couldn't get over the hump because of it, and then again, we turn it over 22 times. This team just doesn't believe in themselves right now, there is no question about that, they've lost a lot of confidence and they're very fragile mentally. It's important as coaches, we try to build them up and work with the positive because right now the things that we are doing well are not translating to wins because we are not doing them consistently. We're not good enough on either side of the ball. Utah held this team (Oregon State) to 31 points on their home floor. Now we were fouling at the end, but if you take away 10 free throws at the end we hold them to 62 and that's still not good enough (to get the win)."
On Wesley Gordon's Road Trip
"If there is a bright spot, I thought Wesley really played well and I've thought he has really played well this whole Pac-12 season. He is quietly becoming maybe our most consistent player, I don't think there is any question about that. In terms of how he rebounds the ball, he's scoring the ball efficiently. We need to get him the ball more, want him to be more aggressive on the block. I thought in the first half he had some more opportunities to score early, and shoot he was still the guy that had all three of our baskets in the first half. But, I really think Wesley is growing as a player, but our team is not growing and that's what concerns me as a coach. There is just not that 40 minutes of togetherness, we come and we go and we pick and choose our spots when we compete."
On Wanting Wesley Gordon And Josh Scott To Be More Aggressive
"I would like to see them take more shots. Now, they were getting doubled some, and when the double-teams come, and this is one of the things this team is not great at, is passing the ball. Basketball is a simple game; when there is two guys on Wesley Gordon, one guy is open. When there are two guys on Josh Scott; someone is open. When teams game plan against us, I think they look at our shooting percentages from our perimeter players and say, 'Let's double these guys because they're not going to make you pay.' We have to find a way to make them pay when they put two guys on them. It's a double-edged sword, your perimeter guys need to play well to free it up for your post guys, and your post guys have to be able to free it up for your perimeter guys. We're just not doing that on a consistent basis."
