Golfers Inch Up Into A Tie For Fourth At Bandon Dunes

March 14, 2015 | Men's Golf

BANDON, Ore. — The University of Colorado men's golf team remains in the hunt for its second title here, as the Buffaloes and the entire field weathered the weather Saturday in the Sixth Annual Bandon Dunes Championship.

Heavy rains forced play to be suspended for four hours and 15 minutes after the teams had completed anywhere from three to five holes.  It made for a long day, but when all was settled, seven teams are within seven strokes of the lead heading into Sunday's final round.

The No. 36 Buffaloes have a team score of 579, or 3-over par, through 36 holes in their quest to win this tournament for a second time; CU was the first to do so with an under-par score back in 2013.
No. 61 Duke and Missouri remained joined at the hip with identical team scores both days, but their 1-under 575 totals are now tied for the lead.  St. Mary's dropped from second into third (577), with Washington State tied with Colorado for fourth.  First-round leader UC Davis and San Jose State are tied for sixth at 582.

“We are in a very good position going into the final round,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “If we really focus on our own energy and what we have control over, it has a chance to be a special one, individually and team-wise.   We've won here before and know what it takes and the challenges this course presents.”

There was just one round scored in the 60s in the second round, and just seven total that were under par, as the average score in the field jumped from 74.2 to 75.6.

Sophomore Ethan Freeman scored CU's only under-par round Saturday, carding a 2-under 70 on the 6,830-yard, par-72 Bandon Dunes Course layout; that has him tied for sixth with a 2-under 142 through 36 holes.  He had a team-best five birdies, as are his nine over two days, with 11 pars, a bogey and a double, helping him score his third subpar round of the season.

Sophomore Jeremy Paul turned in an even-par 72 in the second round for a 2-under 142 total; he is also tied for sixth he had three birdies and 13 pars against three bogeys for his round, which was his 12th of 22 this season either under or at par.

Junior Philip Juel-Berg is in a 4-over 148 after two rounds, as he struggled a bit Saturday with a 78 (6-over);  he is tied for 33rd.  A slow start basically had him playing from behind all day as he bogeyed four of his first five holes.  He had three birdies and seven pars against seven total bogeys and a double, which unfortunately came after his first birdie on the day.

Senior David Oraee carded a 4-over 76, giving him a 6-over 150 total for two rounds, tying him for 50th; he had an unusual round Saturday with no birdies, 14 pars and four bogeys.  While it tied for the third-most pars by a Buff in a single round this year, it marked the first time Oraee failed to score at least one birdie as he has 69 in 22 rounds.

Sophomore Yannik Paul shaved a stroke off his first round score, fashioning a 3-over 75 that has him tied for 54th with a 7-over 151 score.  He had two birdies and 12 pars against three bogeys and a double on Saturday.

“That was a really good round today from Ethan, and another solid one from Jeremy,” Edwards said.   “It was a very tough day to play, especially the first 12 holes or so.  The guys did a good job of grinding through it and I am proud of how they did that.”

Colorado led the field for the second straight day in par-5 scoring (12-under), and is third on the par-4 holes (10-over); the par-3s here have caused the Buffs the most trouble, as CU has collectively played those at 15-over.  CU is also fourth in birdies scored with 30.

San Jose State's Cody Blick remained in the individual lead, as he has a 6-under par score of 138 after a 73 in the second round; that's good for a one stroke lead over Washington State's Michael Anderson.

The final round on Sunday will once again have a 9:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start.
