NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Colorado lacrosse team faced one of its toughest opponents of the season here Wednesday afternoon, falling 17-9 to No. 2 Boston College.
“Coming in here, getting a chance to play Boston College was a great opportunity for us,” said Colorado head coach Ann Elliott. “BC is a very good team and I thought our kids came out and competed. We played a much more complete game than we have in our last couple games and we were in it for the most part.
We weren't able to come back the way we would have liked, but I thought outside of that the team competed hard. It's something we're going to grow from and learn from to get better so we can be in these games closer down the stretch.”
The Buffaloes held the Eagles in check early on and throughout much of the second half, until Boston College scored five straight goals over the final five minutes to close out the game and remain undefeated, improving to 10-0 on the season.
Colorado dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-2 on the road.
During the first half, Boston College built a three-goal advantage at 6-3, its biggest lead of the game at that point, but Colorado responded scoring two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to two before halftime. Freshman Blair Sisk converted on a free position attempt, tallying her 12th goal of the year and sophomore Carly Cox scored with 47 seconds remaining in the first period off Marie Moore's first assist of the season.
After the break, each team exchanged a pair of goals from the 8-meter mark. Boston College's Sarah Mannelly and Caroline Margolis scored back-to-back to extend its lead to four, and then Colorado responded as sophomore Johnna Fusco scored two of her team-leading four goals of the game and brought the Buffs back to within two.
The Eagles would make it 12-7, reeling off three straight goals, but Colorado kept battling to once again pull to within three at the 9:21 mark. Fusco scored on another free-position shot and Moore came-up with the ball in front of the Eagles' goal to put away her fourth tally of the season.
That's as close as the Buffs would get the rest of the afternoon though as Boston College proved why it's one of the best teams in the country, adding five more goals to claim the 17-9 win.
“We were able to get a little bit of a spark when we made it 12-9,” said Elliott. “We had the ball down on our attack with a great look, but weren't able to put it away and after that with limited time left in the game (six minutes) we had to come out and start pressuring and once we started to pressure them they did a great job finding open looks and they put the ball away.”
Boston College was led by Mikaela Rix on offense. She scored five goals for the Eagles, including two as part of their 5-0 run at the end and now has 30 on the season.
Fusco's four-goal day marked her sixth multi-goal performance of the year and fifth hat trick in seven games.
The Buffs conclude their three-game road trip and non-conference schedule on Friday, March 27 against UMass Lowell. Game time is set for 12 p.m. MT.
