Colorado at Washington Quotes

March 05, 2015 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle

On UW's Zone Defense
“Yeah it was good, we kind of figured with them being down a couple guys they would come out in a zone. We've faced the zone a lot tonight. We were a little slow to start, but we started to get the ball inside, both to the high-post and to the baseline area which is what we want to do against that zone, and we did a pretty good job of it. We had pretty good ball movement, and good patience.”

On Wesley Gordon's Passing Ability, But Lack of Scoring
“We get the ball to Wesley in the high post and he's a good passer, he's a willing passer, he likes to pass, but he had a little butter fingers on his hands at the end of the game so we had to get him out and get that checked out, he couldn't secure the ball down the stretch. But, I tell you what, Wesley is a very unselfish player and he's a guy that we want to be aggressive and I don't like it when he is 0-for-0. I want him to look at the basket and be a threat, but sometimes it's hard against that zone. You're a facilitator more at the high post than you are a finisher, but that doesn't mean he can square up and take a 15-footer. We want him to be able to be aggressive.”

On UW's Comeback To Start The Second Half

“They scored 17 points in the first half on us, and then they scored 15 points in the first four minutes of the second half. It's just like, 'Holy cow guys.' We have to do a better job and be a little bit more alert, because we know that they are capable shooters. I just think sometimes, our team has a tendency to relax a little bit when we have a lead. Fortunately we were scoring on our end, so we were trading baskets with them and the lead didn't shrink too much. The only way to continue to extend the lead is to get stops, and after the first four minutes of the second half I thought we did a better job of that. To have your guards not shooting well against a zone, and still score like we scored means we were doing some good things inside. If we can score inside, and get a couple of guys hitting some threes then holy cow, look out, we're pretty good.”

On The Effort Of The Bench, And Momentum Gained From The Win
“Whether you start or come off the bench, the whole key is to give the team energy and play well and play with passion. If we do that, good things can happen. Again, Washington is a little beat up. They were kind of where we were when they came in and beat us (in Boulder); we had two starters out in Xavier Johnson and Josh Scott, and they had a couple guys out today. This was a much-needed win and hopefully it will give us some momentum as we head over the mountains to Pullman on Sunday and then into the conference tournament in Las Vegas next week.”

On Getting A Much Needed Road Win
“Yeah, I mean we just knew that we had to come in and play hard, get stops and rebound. They were a little under-manned tonight, but we came in and got the win.”

On How His Back Feels
“I got some treatment on Monday that really help my back out and so I'm feeling better than I've ever felt in a while. So, that's part of the reason why that (his strong performance) happened.”

On Wesley Gordon Distributing The Basketball
“He's definitely helping me out and getting a couple of buckets, I sure like that, but I would like it if he should the ball too.”

On What This Win Means For The Team
“It's a big deal, we need to get on a roll here going into the Pac-12 Tournament. We're a capable team when we pay attention to defense and rebounding and actually move the ball around a little bit. But, we're capable of a lot of things and I think it's time for us to show that we're a talented team, but also the work that goes into winning.”

On The Team Pushing The Tempo Better
“I don't really know. Coach made a point that we try to say we're a running team, but we haven't been running the ball as much. In one of our film sessions it was just like, 'If we're going to be a running team, then run.' I think you are seeing an effort to do that. Sometimes we get moving too fast, but at the same time at least we are running and it tires teams out because we train at altitude and that's an advantage most teams don't get.”
