Oraee, Holland Earn Athlete Of The Week Honors
April 16, 2015 | General, Men's Golf, Track and Field
BOULDER - The University of Colorado's Athlete of the Week award for the week of March 6-12 was given to Ana Holland (track & field) for the second week in a row and to David Oraee (men's golf).
Holland continued her hot streak, this time performing well in the 100 meter run at last weekend's Colorado Invitational. She won the event in 11.69 seconds, tying the fourth best time in school history. She was also a member of the women's 4x100 meter relay that won in 45.79, the fifth best time in CU history. She was honored last week after she broke the school record in the 200, recording a time of 23.54 seconds
Oraee led the Buffaloes to third place in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, as he carded an 8-under par 68-68-72?208 total on the 7,334-yard, par-72 Whirlwind Golf Club course layout; he finished fourth, one shot out of the lead. The senior had an outstanding tournament overall, scoring an eagle, 11 birdies and 37 pars with just five bogeys in recording his season-best score for 54 holes. He played the par-3s better than everyone else in the field (minus-3), and tied for 10th-best on the par-5s (7-under).
Oraee enjoyed his team-best fifth tournament of the year without scoring worse than a bogey throughout, with it his third career top five finish and his 10th in the top 10 tying him for 10th on CU's all-time list.
Also nominated were Paige Soenksen (lacrosse) and Connor Winter (track & field).
Colorado's goalkeeper, Soenksen recorded a combined 27 saves in two games last weekend at USC and at San Diego State. Against the Trojans, she made 11 saves and held USC to 50 percent shooting from the 8-meter mark as the Women of Troy only tallied three goals on six attempts. CU fell 12-9 in its first game at McAlister Field.
Soenksen helped the Buffs earn their first MPSF road win of the season, defeating SDSU, 7-6. The sophomore faced 22 shots on frame and recorded 16 saves. Soenksen also made two pivotal saves in the final minute to help hold off a late SDSU rally.
Winter had an impressive debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last Saturday at the Colorado Invitational, finishing first in 9:10.60. The time is 19th overall in the country and 12th in the west region.
