Golfers Remain In 11th At Pac-12 Championships

April 28, 2015 | Men's Golf

PULLMAN, Wash. — The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded its best score in three rounds of the 56th annual Pac-12 Championships here Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to bump the 11th place Buffaloes up in the standings.

No. 3 Arizona State moved from second into first after recording the best single round of the tourney to date, an 8-under 342; that gave the Sun Devils a 3-under 1,047 team score.  No. 9 Stanford inched up into second but trail by nine with a 1,056 total, while the leader at the midway point, No. 16 Southern California tumbled into third, 13 back at 1,060.

Colorado, ranked No. 48, posted a team score of 11-over 361 for a 54-hole total of 1,100; that's five strokes back of 10th place Arizona (1,095), but 20 back of No. 14 UCLA (1,080).

“We certainly were a little better overall today, but it's still very disappointing,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “We were hoping for a better performance to be in position to move up into the standings and that just didn't happen, we're having too many struggles.  Overall, there just isn't much good to report.”

Sophomore Yannik Paul continued to be CU's top performer in the standings, as he has a 7-over 217 total for three rounds after a 4-over 74 Tuesday on the 7,257-yard, par-70 Palouse Ridge Golf Club course layout.  He made his turn at 1-under, but scored five bogeys on the front nine on his way in (CU started on No. 10).

The older of the two twins, sophomore Jeremy Paul, recorded Colorado's first subpar score here this week, turning in a 1-under 69 for a 9-over 219 total; that has him tied for 39th.  CU's stroke average leader (71.7), he had three birdies and 13 pars against just two bogeys in his third round.

Junior Philip Juel-Berg had a second straight 3-over 73 for a 10-over 220 score, good for 45th place, as he had three birdies, 10 pars, four bogeys and a double; he finished strong with two birdies in his final three holes.

Senior David Oraee and junior Drew Trujillo are tied for 60th with 17-over 227 scores heading into the final round.  Oraee, a shade behind Jeremy Paul in team stroke average (71.8), had a second straight 75 with the exact same breakdown (one birdie, 12 pars, four bogeys and a double).  Trujillo, after opening with an 85, has countered with a 72 and then on Tuesday, an even-par 70; he had a team-best four birdies in the third round, with 11 pars, two bogeys and a double.

Sophomore Ethan Freeman had an 8-over 78, giving him an 18-over 228 total, tying him for 63rd.  He really only had two bad holes, but those accounted for eight strokes on the negative sides, triple and quintuple bogeys, both on  par-5s, otherwise he played the other 16 holes even with two birdies, 12 pars and two  bogeys.

“Jeremy was very solid, Philip was a little better today and I'm really proud of how Drew responded in his second and third rounds after the way he started,” Edwards said.  “David is just having a bit of struggle this week, but he is certainly capable of closing things out here with a good effort.”

Stanford's Maverick McNealy, ranked as the nation's No. 1 player by Golfweek, extended his lead in the individual standings, turning in a second straight 68 for a 9-under 201 total.  He leads Cal's K.K. Limbhasut by four shots, despite the Cal freshman recording the second best score in the third round, a 4-under 66.

The final round is set for Wednesday; the Buffaloes will again be paired with Utah and Arizona, with tee times starting at 10:06 MDT off the No. 10 tee.

“We certainly want to move up as best we can, but we're going to focus on playing better and executing our strategy,” Edwards said.  “If we can do that, our place will take care of itself.”

NOTES: The average score through three rounds is 72.82, with the third round average at 72.68 despite breezy conditions to open the day ... Colorado usually plays the par-5s as well as any school in the nation, but here, the Buffs are last, playing them at 12-over par (ASU leads all schools at minus-20) ... The Buffaloes for the most part haven't scored a lot of big numbers (19: 16 double bogeys, one triple and two quintuple, but the five of those weren't figured into team scoring), though the average for the other 11 schools is nine through three rounds.  CU, on average, has more bogeys and thus fewer par/subpar holes that its season average.
