BOULDER - With each season basketball is becoming more-and-more a popular sport at the University of Colorado and budding girls basketball players of all ages and abilities have an exciting summer to look forward to here in Boulder.
Colorado is offering seven different camps in a two-week period this June allowing interested campers and teams a wide variety of options. Camps are filling up quickly, so be sure to register for your chance at this great experience today!
“We are preparing for another thrilling camp season in which we will teach the skills necessary to help each player improve as a basketball player,” Colorado head coach Linda Lappe said.
Camp activity tips off the weekend of June 13-14 with three different Elite Camp sessions for grades 8-12; Skill Camp, Post/Guard Camp and Shooting Camp. The Elite Skill Camp (June 13, 1-4 p.m.) will emphasize developing high level skills while receiving individualized instruction from the CU coaching staff. ?Advanced individual and team concepts focusing on offensive and defensive fundamentals will also be taught.
Later that evening (June 13, 6-9 p.m.) the focus will change to positions for the Elite Post/Guard camp. This camp will break down what it takes to be an elite point guard, off guard, and post player.? Each breakout group will be led by a member of the CU coaching staff and will emphasize both physical and mental skills each position requires to be successful.
On Sunday (June 14, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) the Elite Shooting Camp will teach campers proper shot mechanics, footwork, and mindset needed to become a great shooter.? Campers will be provided drills that they can take with them to work on throughout the summer months emphasizing game shots at game speed.
Individual sessions are showcased next with Individual Camp and Little Dribblers running June 15-18. The Little Dribblers Camp, for ages 5-9, is a half-day session for the first time camper who will learn age appropriate skills in a fun atmosphere. CU's Individual Camp, which runs concurrent to the Little Dribblers Camp, is a full day session for ages 9-14. The Individual Camp will offer basketball instruction in both offensive and defensive areas, plus campers will compete in various skills contests and play in 5-on-5 games.
Colorado's Shooting Camp is an all-day session on June 19, for ages 8-18. This camp is designed to improve footwork, shooting technique and accuracy through instruction and repetition. Each camper will be taught the fundamental approach to shooting through a step-by-step shooting progression -- the lay-up, set shot, pull up jumper, shooting off screens, and the 3-point shot.
Colorado's Team Camp closes out the summer camp season June 26-28. The Team Camp guarantees six games and one time-and-score situation. Varsity and junior varsity levels are available with games being played on the Coors Events Center main floor as well as the practice facility.
All of Colorado's camps will be held at the Coors Events Center with breakout sessions in the attached basketball/volleyball practice facility and also at Balch Fieldhouse. The camp staff will consist of the Colorado women's basketball coaching staff, current and former CU players, as well as regional college and high school coaches.
Campers will also have the chance to participate in contests and skill competitions with daily awards and prizes. There will also be seminars on strength and conditioning, NCAA rules and academic eligibility, mini-clinics and coaching seminars and instruction featuring CU's coaching staff.
“Camp season is one of my favorites because everybody on our team has been a camper at one point in time and remembers how much fun we had,” Lappe said. “It's our goal to make sure every kid goes home with that same experience.”
