No. 11 BYU Tops CU, 2-0

PROVO, Utah – The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season here Friday evening, falling to the 11th-ranked BYU Cougars, 2-0 at South Field.
The Buffs move to 1-1-1 on the season and BYU remains unbeaten at 2-0 overall.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead, capitalizing off a corner kick in the 13th minute. Sophomore Stephanie Ringwood won the ball at the top of the 18, had a one touch pass to midfielder Elena Medeiros and her shot deflected off the far post and into the back of the net.
"BYU played very well and they deserved to win the match," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We talked about starting fast and we got off to a bit of a slow start. We gave up the early goal, but after that I thought we settled down."
Sophomore Brie Hooks tried to answer soon after with a couple opportunities on the attack, but BYU's defense was able to come up with the stop each time. Hooks' first shot was blocked and then the ball went straight into goalkeeper Rachel Boaz's hands on her next chance.
Hooks led the offense with three shots and had one on goal. Junior Danica Evans also put one of her two shots on frame.
The Cougars added their second goal in the 27th minute when Medeiros, surrounded by CU defenders created some space inside the box and connected with forward Nadia Gomes as she put the ball into the right corner, out of the reach of CU goalkeeper Kate Scheele.
Colorado, playing in front of a record-setting crowd as 5,589 people packed the stands continued to fight in the second half, but BYU was able to hold on for the shutout.
In the 60th minute, Madison Krauser had a shot that went high and less than a minute later Evans' cross into the box was quickly interrupted with Boaz gabbing the ball before it had a chance to reach a Buff on the opposite side. Senior Kahlia Hogg also had an opportunity at the 70:20 mark on a set-piece. She booted the ball into a crowded box, but again, an aggressive Boaz jumped to steal it away in mid-air.
"We came out in the second half and played much better," Sanchez said. "We don't take any solace in losing, but we realize BYU is a very good team and at home they are very difficult to play. I think we take some positives from the second half. We created a few good chances and could have gotten back in the game, but it's a learning experience for us."
The Buffaloes will have a quick turnaround as they return home to host New Mexico on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
"Win, lose or draw, we knew today's game was going to take a lot out of us," Sanchez added. "It's all about recovery now. New Mexico is a team that's tough to score on. They've got a new coaching staff and they're playing with a lot of spirit. We knew we would have to move on from this game quickly."
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MDT. Fans arriving early to the match will receive a free commemorative seat cushion to celebrate the Buffs' back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
