Crosby Becomes Packers All-Time Leading Scorer

September 23, 2015 | Football

BOULDER - It was a rather uneventful play, routine as you might call it, but in the history of one of the NFL's oldest franchises, it was a play for the record books.

Packers K, Mason Crosby chipped in a 21-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter of Green Bay's 27-17 win over Seattle to become the Packers' all-time leading scorer. The field goal brought Crosby's total to 1,057 points, surpassing former kicker Ryan Longwell who accumulated 1,054 from 1997-'05.

"It's just so special," Crosby told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel following the game. "I've been part of this organization for nine years. The history, the guys that came before me... to be able to hold the record is awesome."

The record-breaker was Crosby's fourth field goal of the game as he finished 4-for-4 on the night, including a 54-yarder in the first quarter. Crosby also owns the record for most points in Packers' history in regular and postseasons combined, which he set last year during the Packers divisional game. He has 101 points in 13 playoff games.

Crosby, who was drafted by Green Bay in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, holds the CU record for all-time scoring with 307 points. He is one of only six players to lead a professional team as well as their college team in scoring.

Other Buffs in the NFL news

Former CU defensive back Jalil Brown made his first NFL regular season start since 2012 when he played with Kansas City. Brown, now serving his second-stint with the Indianapolis Colts, had a solid-outing during the Monday night showdown with the New York Jets.

Brown recorded six tackles to go along with a pass deflection, however, the Colts fell 20-7 and dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Brown's counterpart at CU, Jimmy Smith got his 2015 season off to an impressive start with a 24-yard pick-six against future hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning in Week 1. Smith signed a 4-year, $48 million contract extension in the offseason with $21 million guaranteed.

Nate Solder, of the New England Patriots, made his 62nd career start in Week 2. Solder has started in all but three games thus far in his fifth year with the Patriots, who drafted the former All-American in 2011. Solder signed a two-year $20.6 million extension with New England last offseason.

2014 CU captain, Daniel Munyer was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. Former defensive star Will Pericak signed with Seattle last off season and is on their practice squad as a center, making the move to offense, putting the number of Buffs in the NFL into double-digits for the season (David Bakhtiari, Justin Drescher, Brad Jones, Tyler Polumbus, and Paul Richardson being the others).
