Pregame Notes

  • Buffs win toss, choose to defer. Buffs to kick off and defend north goal.
FIRST QUARTER

Buffs kicked off to OSU. Beavers produced one first down, punted to Colorado 9.

For the first time this year, Buffs didn't score on their first possession of the game. Steven Montez threw incomplete on three straight downs and Buffs punted, giving OSU ball at own 47. Beavers obtained first edge in field position battle.

OSU then methodically drove deep into CU territory, converting a pair of third downs to produce a first-and-10 at the Colorado 20-yard line. OSU quarterback Darrell Garretson threw complete to Seth Collins on third-and-7, then ran for 3 yards on third-and-3 for the first down.

OSU then managed just 6 yards in 3 plays and kicked 32-yards field goal for 3-0 lead. First time CU has trailed in first quarter all season.

Buffs took possession at own 25 after kickoff. Kyle Evans then carried six straight times for 24 yards before the Buffs caught OSU with a play-action pass. Montez faked to Evans, then threw 51 yards to a wide open Shay Fields for the first touchdown of the game. CU's PAT attempt was blocked, but Buffs led 6-3 with 6:09 left in first quarter.

Buffs then forced OSU punt and took possession at own 14. CU marched 86 yards in 10 plays, getting another Montez TD pass to Fields, who was wide open again. Montez showed great patience in the pocket behind good protection on the TD throw. Davis Price kicked the PAT and Buffs took 13-3 lead.

OSU then took the kickoff and had three plays before the end of the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

Buffs then forced an OSU punt, getting a third-down strip-sack of Garretson from Jimmie Gilbert. OSU punted from its own 43-yard line following the 20-yard loss and Colorado took possession at its own 13-yard line.

Once again, poor field position didn't bother the Buffs as Montez and Fields connected again. This time, it was a 67-yard TD pass as Montez threw to the sideline to Fields, who received a great block from Devin Ross. That gave Fields an alley down the sideline and he took the ball to the end zone for his third TD catch of the day. The drive covered 87 yards and Price's PAT gave Buffs 20-3 lead.

CU's scoring drives to this point had covered 75, 86 and 87 yards.

OSU cut the lead to 20-6 on its next possession. The Beavers drove from their own 38 to the CU 22 before Gilbert again applied pressure on third-and-long, forcing an incompletion. Oregon State settled for a 40-yard Garrett Owens field goal with 9:27 left in the half.

Anthony Julmisse had a 33-yard return on the ensuing kickoff and the Buffs quickly moved into OSU territory.  Phillip Lindsay had a 13-yard reception, then two rushes for 11 yards before Montez ran for 14 to the OSU 28. Montez got up slowly and and OSU player was injured on the play, forcing an officials timeout.

Colorado then used seven plays to go the last 28 yards, getting a 1-yard touchdown run from Lindsay on fourth-and-1 to take a 27-6 lead.

OSU switched quarterbacks, going to freshman Conor Blount, but the Buffs defense forced a three-and-out and Colorado took possession at its own 20 with 3:06 left in the half.

Colorado was forced to settle for a field goal and 30-6 lead on its next possession. Price's 54-yard FG was the longest by a freshman in CU history.

But following CU's ensuing kickoff, Kenneth Olugbode delivered a hute hit on Artavis Pierce as he tried to catch a passon OSU's second play of the drive. CU's Rick Gamboa plucked the ball out of midair and raced 20 yards untouched into the end zone for a 37-6 CU lead at the half.

THIRD QUARTER

Colorado took the opening kickoff but a tripping penalty stalled the drive at midfield and the Buffs punted to the Oregon State 10-yard line. Colorado's defense then forced a three-and-out and OSU punted to the Colorado 29, where the Buffs took over with 10:06 to go in the third quarter.

Oregon State once again held, but on the second play following CU's second punt of the half, Colorado's Tedric Thompson picked off Blount for CU's second takeaway of the day. It was Thompson's second interception of the season and the eighth of his career. The pick gave CU possession at its own 49.

The Buffs then drove inside the OSU 10-yard line, getting a 22-yard run from Lindsay for the big play of the drive. The march stalled at the OSU 4 and Price added a 22-yard field goal to give Colorado a 40-6 lead with 4:38 to go in the third quarter.

OSU took the ensuing kickoff and drove into Colorado territory for the Buffs halted the march. OSU punted and Colorado took over at its 16.

Jordan Gehrke then entered the game for the Buffs at quarterback, along with several other backups, including running back Michael Adkins. The third quarter ended with CU leading, 40-6.

FOURTH QUARTER

Colorado started the quarter with the ball on its own 32. The Buffs methodically continued the drive downfield, with Gehrke providing a 23-yard gain to the OSU 2-yard line for a first and goal. Two plays later, Adkins scored from 1 yard out and Price's PAT gave the Buffs a 47-6 lead with 10:18 to go in the game.
