Freeman leads the way with 17 birdies, sixth-place effort

PARKER — The University of Colorado men's golf team closed with two of the top team rounds in the tournament and in the process catapulted into a second place finish Tuesday in the University of Denver's inaugural Paintbrush Invitational.

No. 3-ranked Oklahoma State distanced itself in the end in winning by nine shots, as the Cowboys finished with a 14-under par 850 score.  The Buffaloes, ranked No. 19 in the nation, wrapped things up with consecutive 5-under par 283 scores for an overall tally of 859, or 5-under par.  No. 7 Texas Tech was the only other school to finish under par, with an 861 score (minus-3).  No. 14 and defending NCAA champion Oregon (868) and No. 40 New Mexico (871) rounded out the top five.

Colorado was in eighth place after Monday's first round, and started to make a charge up the standings when the second round was suspended due to darkness.  The Buffs were making up ground, ascending into a tie for fourth by the end of the day, and when play resumed Tuesday morning, CU went on to post the second best team score in the second round, a 5-under 283 but slipped back one notch into fifth.

CU picked up where it left off and continued to move up, several times pulling even with Oklahoma State before the Cowboys pulled away over the last six holes.  The second place finish still netted the Buffaloes victories over four schools ranked in the top 40, including the two aforementioned in the top 15.

Only Colorado and Oklahoma State placed three among the top 10 finishers this week at the challenging Colorado Golf Club, which covers 7,357 yards and is a par-72 measure.

Senior Ethan Freeman led the CU effort here, as he closed with a 4-under 68 for a 211 total, or 5-under par, which netted him a sixth place finish.  He had 17 birdies, second-most in the 88-man field and a CU team-best this fall.  He also had 25 pars and did not score worse than bogey on any hole, and at times had two runs of at least three straight birdies including a stretch where he scored six in a seven-hole run that helped him to a career-best 31 on the back nine in the second round.

Senior Jeremy Paul had his best effort of the fall after traveling around the hemisphere in the last three weeks between the World Team Amateur Championships in Cancun and the first stage of web.com tour qualifying in Nebraska City.  He fired a 3-under 69 to finish up with a 4-under 212, tying him for seventh place.  He had nine birdies and 34 pars against 13 bogeys for the week, and played the par-4s at 5-under overall, second-best in the field.

Junior Yannik Paul continued his solid play this fall, posting his fourth top 20 finish in five tries in tying for 10th with a 3-under 213 scorecard.  He had an eagle, 11 birdies and 33 pars against eight bogeys and a double.

Junior Spencer Painton closed with a 3-over 75 for a 223 (plus-8), tying for 34th.  He had six birdies and 36 pars, the latter adding to his team-high.  He was thwarted a bit bu 11 bogeys and a double.

Freshman Morten Toft Hansen, who came in as CU's leader in stroke average (71.1), came back to Earth a bit here, as he finished with an 84 that put him at 31-over 247 for the event, tying him for 84th.  He did score six birdies over the two days, but had 10 holes of double-bogey or worse that came spaced apart at times, and thus never allowing him to gain any momentum.

Freshman Victor Bjorlow played here as an individual, meaning his score didn't count toward CU's team total, and he performed well in tying for 25th with a 3-over 219 score, which included a 2-under 70 in the middle round, his best collegiate score to date in relation to par.  Of the 13 players in the field competing as individuals, he tied for fourth.

"We had a really strong round and overall effort today, and in particular Jeremy, Yannik and Ethan were very good," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "After a sluggish start yesterday, to finish second against this field is something we're really happy about.  All three had really nice tournaments, and led the way for us this week.

"We wanted to attack the golf course, but you also have to be really patient," Edwards said of the challenge that Colorado Golf Club posed to the participants.  "That's something I thought we did really well this week.  They were for the most part all patient, and within that, we were able to manage our games well."

"We've got a really strong group of players, and this is a really a hard golf course, and it demands a lot out of every phase of a player's game.  We were able to match that for the entire tournament.

Denver's Petter Mikalsen claimed medalist honors, finishing at 13-under 203 while owning a three-to-five stroke lead most of the day.  He took over the lead after a spectacular 8-under 64 in the second round and was never really threatened but still finished up with a 69.

The Buffaloes have one fall tournament remaining, one that will feature many top ranked programs as well as Pac-12 colleagues, UCLA's Gifford Collegiate Championship in Napa, Calif, Nov. 7-9.  It will have both stroke and match play competition.

When asked if he thought his team was worthy of being ranked so high nationally, Edwards did not flinch.

"Absolutely.  I was really high on this team coming in, and they've done a really nice job," he said.  "There have been a lot of positives and this is a good lead-in to prepare for our last tournament of the fall.  There will be a lot of good teams competing in it – it will be loaded.  I definitely think we're among that group, and our focus will always be to win a tournament like that."
