Hodgkins, Lindsay Named Athlete's of the Week
October 18, 2016 | Football, Women's Golf
This week's Athlete of the Week honors go to Kirsty Hodgkins (women's golf) and Phillip Lindsay, Jr. (football). Hodgkins finished tied for fifth at 1-over at the Stanford Intercollegiate, which is her second-straight individual top 5 finish and second in three career collegiate tournaments. She totaled 143 in the rain-shortened 36-hole tournament, which featured 13 of the top 50 teams in the nation.
In the first round, she logged a personal collegiate best 70, for a 1-under on the par 71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course. She finished the first round in a tie for fourth place, just three shots out of the lead. Hodgkins had four birdies on the day, putting three together in a five-hole stretch from the 17th through the 3rd, that put her at 3-under and for a time alone in second place.
In Saturday's second round, Hodgkins shot a 2-over 73 and despite dropping three strokes from the first round, she only dipped one place on the individual leaderboard. Hodgkins picked up two birdies early in the round, both on par 3's at No. 14 and No. 17. Starting on the No. 10 tee for the second-straight day, she played the back nine even before going 2-over on the front.
In Colorado's 40-16 win over No. 24 (USA Today/Coaches) Arizona State, Phillip Lindsay, Jr., rushed 26 times for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns (8.4 yards per carry; along with 4 catches for 20 yards receiving).
Against the nation's No. 5 rushing defense, Lindsay had his third 100-yard career rushing game and his first 200-yard game (he did not lose any yards, and has 618 gross yards and 614 net on the season). It was the sixth-highest game in CU history with no yards lost rushing. His 75-yard TD run was the longest play of his career and the 25th rushing of 75 yards or longer in Colorado football history. Lindsay became the 13th player to gain 3,000 all-purpose yards in school history (ending the game with 3,204). He also became the 14th member of CU's 500/500 Club (rushing and receiving yards).
Lindsay is the first CU player to rush for over 200 yards since Chris Brown had 211 at Missouri (Nov. 9, 2002; a 42-35 CU win in overtime). Lindsay's also the first Buff to do it in Boulder since Marlon Barnes had 237 in a 37-8 win over Iowa State on Nov. 14, 1998. ASU had allowed only 536 total rushing yards (89.3 per) in six games, and just 3.0 per rush, entering the CU contest. It was the first 200-yard game against Arizona State since Washington's State Jerome Harrison had 240 in 2005.
Also nominated this week: Danica Evans (women's soccer) and Gabby Simpson (volleyball).
Danica Evans scored both goals for the women's soccer team in its 2-1 win over Washington on Friday, the team's only match last week. The win was the 10th in a row for the soccer team and they are now 6-0 in the Pac-12.
Gabby Simpson helped the Buffs to a 1-1 weekend against a pair of ranked opponents. In the upset of No. 13 Washington State, Simpson led the Buffs with 17 kills and also handed out a team-best 26 assists. She also posted four block assists and recorded eight digs as CU handed WSU its first home loss of the season. In the following match against No. 7 Washington, Simpson again reached double-digits in kills with 10 and handed out 14 assists. She picked up seven digs and added a block. She averaged 3.38 kills, 5.00 assists, 1.88 digs, 0.62 blocks and 3.69 points per set in the two matches.
