No. 3 Stanford Snaps CU's 10-Match Winning Streak
October 20, 2016 | Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. - No. 22 Colorado dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 3 Stanford on Thursday night, snapping a 10-match winning streak for the Buffaloes. CU suffered its first defeat in Pac-12 play and dropped to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Stanford improved to 13-1-1 and 6-1-0.
Colorado, Stanford and Southern California are all now in a three-way tie atop the Pac-12 standings.
Â
CU's 10-match winning streak was the second-longest in school history behind an 11-match streak in 2003. The 6-0 start to Pac-12 play was the best start in conference play in school history and the longest conference winning streak.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: Stanford outshot the Buffs 10-3 in the first half, but Jalen Tompkins stopped all four shots that were on goal. CU had one great scoring chance in the half. In the 30th minute, Taylor Kornieck beat two defenders down the left side of the box and centered a ball to Megan Massey in front of the net. Massey hit a one-touch shot to the center of the net, but it was blocked on the goal line by a Stanford defender to keep the match scoreless.
Â
The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead at 48:05 when Jordan DiBiasi headed in a cross from Tegan McGrady. The goal came less than two minutes after Tompkins made an unbelievable leaping save to stop a nearly identical header off another cross.
Â
Stanford tacked on another at 59:32 when Averie Collins tapped in a cross.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Tompkins finished with seven saves in the match. Danica Evans had a team-high three shot attempts.
Â
UP NEXT: CU will play at No. 10 California on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
Â
NOTES: Tompkins broke the CU freshman saves record in the first half. She entered the night one behind Annie Brunner's previous mark of 61 from 2010 … when CU went down 1-0 in the 49th minute, it was the first time CU had trailed in a match since Sept. 1 in a 2-1 overtime loss to Michigan State, spanning 957 minutes and 23 seconds … the two-goal deficit after Stanford's second goal was the first two-goal deficit of the season

Overall thoughts on the match
"They don't give away a lot of chances. Their defense is really predicated on their offense, on keeping the ball. I thought in the first half we did well. I thought we stayed into it. We created one great chance. At the end of the day, you're not going to get more than a couple (of chances) against a team like this. I thought created a great chance and their keeper made a good save, but 0-0 at half. The danger was the first 15 minutes of the second half of staying in it and I think that's kind of where we lost the plot at little bit. But having said that, I'm real proud of the effort. We could've folded up shop. Their starters were in there until the 90th minute. I felt that we had some players who stepped in and stemmed the tide a little bit and we created a couple of chances there at the end that if it was a 0-0 game, maybe it's different. But I'm real pleased with the effort and the focus and the commitment. I thought there were some really good individual performances today, but over 90 minutes we weren't good enough today."
On the game possibly being different if Massey scores in the first half
"Maybe yes, maybe no. To be fair, I thought the keeper made a good save. Taylor did a great job to create that opportunity, but you have to create more over 90 minutes and we know that. But like I said, it would've been easy to fold up shop down 2-0 and we kept working hard and battling. We're going to try to take some positives from this and get ready for Cal on Sunday."
What are the positives from this game to take into Sunday
"With some players out and some players that went out tonight, players stepped in and were composed. You're never ready for big games unless you play in big games and this was a big game. They respected us and Stanford played well. Now we have some players who have a little more experience in these big matches under their belt. We're going to need them on Sunday. So hopefully they gained some confidence and we'll be ready to go on Sunday."
On the play of Tompkins
"There's nothing she could do on those two goals. She kept us in the game and gave us a chance for sure. I'm sure she feels maybe she could've or should've maybe done better, but when you look at the big picture, it was the other end of the field where we just didn't create enough over 90 minutes."
