Evans and Thompson Receive Athlete of the Week Honors

October 25, 2016 | Football, Soccer, Volleyball

Danica Evans (soccer) and Tedric Thompson (football) earned the female and male Athlete of the Week honors for their performances throughout the weekend.

The women's soccer team snapped its streak of 10 straight wins on Thursday afternoon against third ranked Stanford. However, the team was able to bounce back with a win against No. 10th ranked Cal to come out of the California road trip 1-1. With the loss at Stanford, Colorado has won 11 of its last 12 games and remains third in the Pac-12 standings.

Colorado was held scoreless in its loss to third ranked Stanford but Danica Evans still managed to get off three shot attempts in the game. Moving to Sunday, Evans tied a career-high seven shot attempts against No. 10 Cal. She scored two of the team's three goals in the 3-2 victory. This is Evan's second two-goal match this season. Evans now has 12 points in the last four matches.

Tedric Thompson saved the day in the low scoring affair for the Colorado Buffalo football team as it also took on Stanford over the weekend. Thompson and the Buff's defense allowed the team to squeak by to a 10-5 victory to sit tied atop the Pac-12 South standings.

The Buffs offense had a hard time getting it going but a great defensive effort kept them in the game and ultimately held Stanford to just five points. The Colorado defense has forced a turnover in 21 consecutive games, a streak that leads the nation. Two more came at the hands of Tedric Thompson on Saturday afternoon. The senior safety intercepted two passes – the first coming in the second quarter to limit the Cardinal score to three. Thompson's second interception came midway through the fourth quarter to set up a 22-yard field goal by Chris Graham to seal the deal for the Buffaloes. After recording his ninth and 10th interceptions during the game, he now ranks No. 13 in CU history. He also totaled five tackles (two solo), a third down stop and a touchdown save.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Alexa Smith (volleyball).

Smith led the Buffs to a 1-1 weekend with 3.12 kills and 4.12 digs per set. In the four-set win against Oregon State, she recorded 11 kills and a career-high 19 digs, while adding two blocks for 12.5 points. The following night against No. 23 Oregon, a four-set loss, Smith tallied 14 kills and 14 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. She added an ace and two blocks for 16.0 points.
