Colorado cards the third best score of the final round at 1-under
KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i – Coming off a disappointing 36-hole performance Monday and facing a 3 ½ month break on the horizon, the Colorado women's golf team wanted to make a statement before closing out the fall season alongside their conference compadres.
Â
Statement delivered.
Â
The Buffaloes turned in the day's third-best round, a 1-under 291, to leap from ninth to a tie for fifth to complete the Pac-12 Preview Tournament at the 6,372-yard, par 73 Nanea Golf Club.
WHAT HAPPENED: No. 45 ranked Colorado, registering just the fourth sub-par round for the entire 54-hole tournament, finished tied with No. 26 California at 30-over 906. The Buffaloes attacked the course for 13 birdies on the final day among the four players that scored in the final round. Equally as important, the Buffs stayed away from the big numbers, logging 47 pars with just 12 bogeys and no double bogeys or higher.
Â
Six of those birdies belonged to freshman Kirsty Hodgkins who led Colorado with a 4-under 69, shooting up 12 spots on the final day to finish tied for ninth. Senior Esther Lee and sophomore Gillian Vance both shot an even 73 while freshman Robyn Choi carded a 3-over 76.
Â
Colorado had a top four finish in its sights, at one point sitting at 5-under late in the round, but in the end was edged by No. 46 Oregon by one stroke (+29, 905).
Â
TOURNAMENT FIELD: No. 20 Arizona State used the best overall round of the tournament to claim the title by three strokes over instate rival, No. 30 Arizona. The Sun Devils shot an 8-under 284 to finish at 2-over. The Wildcats, tied with ASU for second after yesterday's second round, had the day's next best score at 5-under 287 to finish 5-over.
Â
No. 3 Stanford, which led by two strokes after round two, fell off with a 5-over 297 in the final round to finish third at 13-over.
Â
KIRSTY HODGKINS (75-76-69—220, +1): Hodgkins recorded her first collegiate sub-70 round with a 4-under 69 in the final round, clinching her third straight top 10 performance as she tied for three others for ninth overall with a 1-over 220. Her 69 tied for the second-best round of the day and third-best overall in the tournament. She got to 4-under quickly, with birdies on four of her first six holes. Starting at No. 12, she birdied on the 400-yard par 4. Hodgkins had back-to-back birdies at No. 14 and No. 15 and closed that stretch by carding a 2 on the 191-yard No. 17. She dropped two strokes at No. 1 and No. 3, both par 4's, but moved back to 4-under with birdies at No. 4 and No. 7.
ROBYN CHOI (74-76-76—226, +7): Choi matched her second round total with a 3-over 76, just missing a spot in the top 20. She tied California's Jiyoon Jang for 21st on the final leaderboard with a 7-over 226. Choi started out her round from No. 11, carding back-to-back bogeys to fall to 2-over, but her round evened out from there to say the least. She played the final 16 holes at 1-over, a round that featured 15 pars, 12 straight and the entire front nine. After struggling at last week's Stanford Intercollegiate, carding two rounds in the 80s, Choi bounced back to have her second-best and tied her third-best rounds on her young collegiate career.
Â
GILLIAN VANCE (76-80-73—229, +10): Vance moved up seven spots in the final overall standings after shooting an even-par 73 in the third round. She finished in a four-way tie for 28th place with a 10-over 229. After scoring three birdies in 36 holes on Monday, Vance had four on Tuesday, three coming in a four-hole span. Starting off from No. 13, she went 1-over for the first four holes before scoring back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and 18. Vance moved to 2-under on the day after a birdie on the par 4 No. 2. She recorded her fourth red number at the 294-yard par 4 No. 5.
Â
ESTHER LEE (78-82-73—233, +14): Lee finished tied for 41st overall after carding an even par 73 in the final round. She was 2-over after four holes, starting on the 15th, but her luck began to change after turning to the front nine. Lee played the front side at 2-under with seven pars and birdies on the 466-yard par 5 No. 4 and the 146-yard par 3 No. 8. She traded a bogey at No. 11 for a birdie on No. 13 to clinch her fifth even par or better round of the fall.
Â
BRITTANY FAN (77-81-78—236, +17): Fan tied Oregon State's Olivia Benzin for 47th overall after logging a 5-over 78 in her final round. She started off well with three straight pars and a birdie 2 on the 191-yard 17th hole to move to 1-under. Fan played the front nine at 4-over and then ended her round with three straight bogeys before closing with a birdie on No. 13.
Â
TORI GLENN (82-84-80—246, +27): Playing as an individual, Glenn had her best round of the tournament with a 7-over 80. She finished 62nd overall at 27-over. Glenn had a rough start with a double-bogey on her first hole at No. 16, but she played steady after that, playing the final 17 holes at 5-over. She had 10 pars including five straight to end her day. Glenn also picked up a birdie on the 342-yard par 4 No. 2.
TOP INDIVIDUALS: USC's Robynn Ree, playing as an individual, took medalist honors with a 6-under, 213. She shot a 3-under 70 in the final round to top UCLA's Mariel Galdiano by two strokes. Galdiano tied the tournament's overall low round at 68 to finish at 4-under overall. Stanford's Albane Valenzuela was  third with a 3-under 216.
NOTEWORTHY: Colorado's third round score of 291 is its third-lowest this fall and its 1-under ties for second in relation to par. The Buffaloes were also 1-under in the final round of the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Hodgkins' 69 ties for the third-lowest single round of the fall, joining Lee's second round at the Dick McGuire Invite. Her 4-under in relation to par ties Lee for second this fall…Vance's 73 was the third even par round of her career…Lee bounced back to contribute to the team score in the final round after coming up short in both rounds Monday, the first two of her Colorado career. She remains an impressive 67-of-69 in rounds contributing to team scoring (.971)…Colorado played the par 4's at 32-over, and average of 4.19, tying Oregon for third best in the tournament…The Buffaloes had a nearly identical performance at the 2015 Pac-12 Preview. Colorado was tied for sixth after two rounds at 20-over before finishing with a 1-under 291 in the third round to finish in fourth overall.
QUOTABLE: Head coach Anne Kelly: "We finally came close to how well this team can play. We can always find areas to improve but they played solid. I know Brittany (Fan) was really frustrated with her play, but it was nice to scratch the surface of what they are capable of doing."
Â
ON IMPROVEMENT OF PLAY FROM MONDAY - "It's the sheer determination and frustration of not living up to their (own) expectations. Of course not playing the way they are capable of, they had something to prove to themselves more than anything else."
Â
ON THE COURSE – "The conditions were better today, wasn't as windy, but still a really tough course. You can't let down mentally for a minute on any of the shots. (The course) requires a lot of decisions; everything that goes into hitting shots. It takes an enormous amount of concentration to play to play this golf course."
Â
ON KIRSTY HODGKINS – "She played really well. After yesterday she told me 'I'm going to shoot a 68 tomorrow'. Four-under on this course is good. She made a statement as being one of the best freshmen in the Pac-12."
Â
ON ROBYN CHOI – "Definitely hit the ball really well. Didn't putt as well as she usually is used to. She's getting more settled in and used to everything. She's a good player; she'll be fine. I look forward to her having a really good spring."
Â
ON GILLIAN VANCE – "She was under par for most of the day. She played really solid. Gillian's short game really on but her ball striking looked very good today."
Â
ON THE FINISH – "We finished fifth, if we played better the first day it would have been fun to see, but I think they're competitive with any team in the Pac-12. And it's such a good conference, you have to come out and play your best every time, but I think this group is very competitive with them."
Â
ON THE BREAK UNTIL SPRING – "It was nice to hear our players wishing we had another tournament, and I kind of do too, but it's not the way the schedule worked out. I heard several comments (from our players) about working hard on putting over the break. To score, win tournaments, we definitely have to putt better. Hopefully we continue to get some nice days in at home and have some time this offseason to practice our short games a little more."
NEXT UP: Colorado's fall season comes to an end. The Buffaloes will return next spring beginning with the Peg Barnard Invitational, Feb. 11-12, in Stanford, Calif.
