Evans, Oliver Named CU Athletes of the Week

November 08, 2016 | Football, Soccer

This week's male and female athlete of the week is awarded to Isaiah Oliver (football) and Danica Evans (soccer).

The Buffs continue their push towards a birth to a conference championship with another solid outing against PAC-12 opponent UCLA over the past weekend. They have now won three straight and have three games remaining in the regular season – two of which will be played at home.

In Colorado's 20-10 win over UCLA, sophomore cornerback Isaiah Oliver returned five punts for a total of 124 yards. One of those returns included a 68-yard runback for a touchdown that clinched the victory with under six minutes to go. It was CU's first punt return for a score since Stephane Robinson returned one 81 yards against Kansas on Oct. 22, 2005.  Oliver is the first Buff to have over 100 yards in punt returns in a game since Josh Smith (4-108) against Eastern Washington on Sept. 6, 2008. Oliver has the most yards since Roman Hollowell had 6 returns for 148 yards against Fresno State on Aug. 26, 2001. Oliver's 124 yards was also the most punt return yards in a game this year by a Pac-12 player and the fourth-most in the NCAA through games of November 4.

The women's soccer team finishes the regular season tied for second in the PAC-12 standings with a conference record of 8-2-1. To no surprise, the team earned its third birth in the NCAA Tournament over the past four seasons. No. 22 ranked Colorado is set to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at home this Saturday at 12 p.m.

Danica Evans has been nothing short of spectacular all year in her senior season for Colorado. She has started in all 20 of the team's matches and has tallied 10 goals- second most amongst the team. She is also tied for the most assists with six. In a 1-1 draw with No. 23 Utah on Friday, Evans scored the team's only goal in the 63rd minute to give Colorado a 1-0 lead before Utah evened the score with a goal in the 78th minute.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Alexa Smith (volleyball)

Alexa Smith led the Buffs to a 1-1 weekend at Coors Events Center. She recorded 10 kills, nine digs, three blocks and an ace in a four set loss to No. 13 Stanford on Friday. Smith tallied a team-best 12 kills and hit .500 in a sweep of California on Sunday, hitting just one error on 22 attacks. She also added five digs, a block and an ace for 13.5 points. Smith averaged 3.14 kills, 2.00 digs, 0.57 blocks and 0.29 aces per set in the two matches.
